Diff output seal replacement

Has anyone replaced a left or right output seal on the diff themselves?

I have a weep, and am looking to replace the seal myself.
I am quite mechanically inclined so no issue there, I am just wondering are there any special tools or parts etc (apart from a new gasket) needed to do the job 'professionally'?

This vid will probably help you to remove the d/shaft to get to seal, in this case a broken OSR d/shaft is being replaced and shows what tools are needed..until you get to seal housing and quite a few tools are needed.

It's quite a bit of work with a lot of the multi link suspension being undone and loosened. You can see the seal at 14:00.

Thanks. I had watched that one before alright, they show removing shaft but didn't remove/replace the seal unfortunately.
I've actually just put the car up on the lift. Got some time off work. Going to give it a go tomorrow!

BTW - how does one get their hands on the workshop/service manual? Ideally the one BMW techs actually use

Not sure myself and probably not easy, but looking at that seal shouldn't it just snick out of its housing..

So I took a chance on €40 and bought an LCI F10 M5 service manual from eManualOnline.

Turns out the thing is over 22GB and works through a virtual machine program.

Some great info to have is in there, but now I'm halfway through the job, my experience of the BMW technician instructions is meh at best.

It leaves a load of stuff out, instructs one to do unnecessary things, and says a heap of special tools are required.

Anyway assuming this job goes OK, I will post up all the pics & videos I'm taking along the way to make a DIY/how-to thread out of this.

So the job is done now, the seal had a mark in it with a bit of a flat spot, very minor but it would explain the weep I had.
Main dealer bit ham fisted putting it in last year I guess.

Took it for maybe 20 mile spin, back up on the lift for inspection and all good.
Will keep an eye on it every 100 miles or so now for a few iterations to be sure it doesn't start a weep.

Did you have any joy making a DIY guide from your pictures/video?

I'm thinking of doing this myself in the next couple of weeks thanks to your encouraging post.

Did you find that you needed any special tools in the end?
