Engine dead

At the moment my 2013 M5 is with BMR performance with suspected injection failure. I'm absolutely gutted as I chose it very carefully and only had the car for 18 months.

Aside from a brand new engine what are my options? It appears that the cost of a new engine plus labour would cost more than I paid for it from a BMW main dealer. It would be such a shame to write off such a lovely car.

Thanks for any help you can give

Bill

Sorry to hear that, did it just suddenly die with failed injector(s)? Doesn't mean the engine is gone surely.

Lots of smoke and rough running then it shut itself down. Error codes say fuel pump failure but BMR say they can smell petrol in the oil - not good. Apparently the whole engine is full of petrol

Sorry to hear about your troubles. If the engine is definitely gone, you can always buy a reconditioned engine or rebuild your own using forged pistons and other reinforced elements. What I am trying to say is you could come off this affair with an even better car. However you should not abandon hope. BMR are very reputable specialists and they will definitely offer you guidance and options. Fingers crossed! Hope for the best and keep us posted!

Thanks for the advice - BMR didn't sound very enthusiastic about a rebuild and recommended buying a new engine @ £21k. Well out of my price range I'm afraid.

Any ideas if I'd get anything for it in its current state?

The trouble is an unknown engine is £10k, and that's a gamble. Yours could be rebuilt for a little more than that. Or you could go with forged rods, f90 pistons, new injectors etc etc for about £15k.

I've just suffered an engine failure myself, and I can't recommend Mr Vanos highly enough.

If petrol is in oil then there's a faulty injector which would mean fuel in oil and rough running. I'd change any faulty injectors and the oil/filter and go from there, I doubt it needs a replacement engine.
Do you get your fuel from Tesco Purley?

I had my rebuilt at Pure Performance in Houston, Tx after the cyl 4 injector diluted the oil and wash the 4/8 bearings. Car has been bullet proof ever since the rebuild. Shipped the whole car to TX from TN and with fresh injectors it was $14k for the rebuild, shipping included.

Do you get your fuel from Tesco Purley?
Both BMR and Munich Legends say that it is likely to have damaged a lot more than that - when the car was started to get it onto the recovery truck there was so much white smoke I thought the whole engine was on fire!

Have you had a similar experience?

Purley Tesco - I try not to buy anything from there unless I am desperate

Thanks all for the replies - one thing that did worry me was that Munich Legends said a F10 engine will only last 100k miles. No doubt there are members here that will dispute that but I wonder how many others have suffered engine failures?

My engines fine, I bought the car privately 6 years ago and no problems, apart from a/c condenser replaced on warranty it's been good. I pushed it with the original plugs to 40k and it was going into 'moderate drive' mode, so after a plug change at Vines Redhill using their BMW M stamped ones with the 2 year warranty, rocket mode returned.
I use Momentum 99 with Redex injection additive every 2nd tank now which protects the fuel system and primes the injectors, I sometimes use the new Texaco 99 Supreme Performance fuel which has no added ethanol but only a few stations stock it, one in Kennington Lane has it when I go there on some weekend mornings up to midday avoiding Khan's congestion charge and there's another one in Tattenham Corner also.I'm not happy with v power as I believe it has too many detergents in it. Esso I will use only in an emergency and the rest I avoid like the plague.

apart from the one I quoted earlier who is in London somewhere,

Mr Vanos is someone also trusted by serious dealers as he is a renown specialist, engine builder, anything BMW : https://www.mrvanos.com/

Lastly there is Hack Engineering in Lewes : https://www.hackengineering.co.uk/ they also do complete rebuilds to spec and upgrading.

as a general comment. nobody can tell you what is really going on until they look into the engine properly, disassemble everything and then do the damage assessment.

if you go down this path and remove the engine and have it inspected then you will know if it's worth keeping or completely rebuilt it.

it's your money mate. nobody can tell you right from wrong. you can also break the car and forget about it. The F10 is still an older car, the next generation F90 has been launched and shortly another one will replace it. Life moves on.

From what you mentioned earlier, it looks like the car you bought was mechanically neglected or lacking proper maintenance that resulted in a major fault. Both specialists told you the same thing more or less. A total or partial rebuilt will be required to ensure the car is roadworthy.

If you have factory injectors (never been changed) you can have the engine covered by BMW as consequential damages if the injector caused the failure. The injector had an extended warranty that provides the same coverages as bmw factory warranty, which is why the engine can be covered as consequential. If the aftermarket shop hasn’t torn anything apart, I’d give it a try at the dealership.

Agree, I had an injector failure at 72K miles. Waiting at a stoplight, engine started to run rough, drivetrain malfunction appeared on screen. Dealership ended up replacing all injectors under the 120,000/10 year extended injector warranty.

Correct, at least in Germany. I talked to an authorized BMW shop before having my injectors replaced on a preventative basis. I was told that once injectors fail, I always have to pay myself if out of warranty. And with 100k miles, I decided to bite the bullet and invest in this marvelous S63
