Thanks a lot - obviously I'm really pleased with it!
With regards to break in I collected the car from Scotland so had a 500 mile drive home, mainly on motorway. First 150 miles very gently, small throttle openings and kept it under 2500 rpm, then gradually increased the revs used until I would let it rev out a couple of times on the way to the dealer for the first service. I've always driven cars and bikes quite hard after the first couple of hundred miles, and as long as they are up to temperature properly before you ask anything of them, and you don't let the engine labour too much, this seems to be fine. I know what you mean about being careful in the wet, I found out yesterday about the car getting a bit snappy in 3rd in MDM mode! Happy new year to all Mark

after the 1200 miles service can you red line the m5 and drive it like you so pose to haha? I only have 300 miles on my m5 now and I been so anxious to drive fast but haven't gone past 75mph and have not rev the car past 4000 rpm. discipline is testing me right now lol

you typically increase gradually.
MDM in the current weather is asking for a huge bill mate. Just the snap from 1st to 2nd at half throttle on a bit of wet can upset the back.

I just completed my break-in service. The clowns here had to call BMW NA Corporate Offices to get permission to install the Castrol Edge 0W-30 oil that I brought with me.

Was nuts. Then another service advisor said I should take a loaner because the break-in service will take 5-6 hours. The very fact that he said this led me to stay and wait, and sure enough it was done in 2 hours. I'm sure their 5-6 hour estimate involved going for a joy ride!

What is so maddening is the arbitrary nature of the responses from dealer to dealer. It suggests terrible internal communication, training, or both-which doesn't give any level of assurance to picky, anal-retentive people. I still have about 900 miles to go before my 1,200, but have sought out the shop foreman, and told him of my neurosis about having vehicles even near the dealer. He has given me the name of the tech-(he says his best)-who will be the only one who will touch the car; he will introduce me to spend a few moments with the tech; he suggests I schedule a Saturday a.m. so I can wait on it, and said my wanting to provide and M1 0W-40 is just fine. Had I gone to another dealer, who knows what would be said/done. I won't rest until all goes as planned. The very fact that your dealer needed to call "Momma" to ask if Castrol Edge 0W-30 would be OK would have probably made me do a pronounced "about face" and walk out the door... I'm telling you, over a lifetime of doing my own maintenance, I have had less than 5% of satisfactory experiences when forced to deal with dealers. Heck, it makes my stomach upset just to type about it in this response...

in my mind its about leadership. People are told what to do rather than encouraged to think for themselves.

I've been told that removing the screw from my rear light needs a loan car as will not be a sit & wait job. I will be checking in & out the mileage & fuel as there is no excuse for a road test in this instance. |
