Break in period, really needed?
does anyone know what the reason is for the break in period. Is this really needed? I just got my 2015 and can't wait to open it up. Unfortunately I travel all the time for work and it's gonna be several months before I hit 1200 miles. Any thoughts?

It's in the manual, there must be a reason. However, I've seen the Performance Center in SC work with brand new M cars for their M driving school, so who knows.

It's needed to brake-in high performance parts as well as DCT, Diff, Engine and etc... This is discussed several times. I believe if German engineers recommend something, you have to do it ...

They also do a break-in period for the cars they use at the Performance Center.

Do you plan on buying this car outright? And keeping for more than 3 years? If leasing, drive it how you like!! These cars are tested and run in already, or they would have stuck a limiter on it from day one restricting rpm to 5k... I wouldn't necessarily track it from day one, but screw the rigid break in regime before you hit 1200 miles... Enjoy the car NOW

Read this and decide for yourself. I always follow hard break in procedures, but it's up to you. Do your research and decide what fits you better. Good luck.
