From AMG C63s to F10 M5

Glad to be back in my favorite ///M! After experiencing MANY cars from BMW -> AMG -> Porsche, and now back to BMW. I'm glad to say that I'm back. My heart was crushed back a few years ago when my E39 M5 suffered an estimated 18K in damages. My heart still stops when I see a tastefully modded one on the road. Actually, I get a little jealous of the driver. Because I miss all the weekends replacing bushings, control arms, upper/lower oil pans, gaskets, replacing the suspension 3 times, bearings, etc.

I decided to come back and stop fooling around. Every time I go to an M Driving School, this M5 is the one I become smitten with all over again. It fits me like a glove and once I caught notice of Sakhir Orange in person!! Well..it was game over. I had to have it. Not bad that it's a CPO car and a complete creampuff. I'll just tip my hat to this worthy E39 M5 successor.

Hi everyone.

Congrats on the M5, that color looks gorgeous. Your dealer polished her up real nice. You should put a coat of wax on it before the shine goes away.

I use Zymol liquid wax from Walmart/Autozone, use it twice a year.

Grilles: Post #7, link and DIY thread. LCI grilles, I also blacked out the sidemarkers/door handles with 3M gloss black wrap.

Sure...

I'll start with the seats. I like the seats in the AMG better. The side bolsters are adjustable and overall the seats are incredibly comfortable. I'm 6 ft 195 lbs if that helps.

I would give the nudge to the AMG in ergonomics and convenience for the entertainment system. The volume slider is on the center console which negates the need to raise your arm to adjust it. For convenience, I really liked having two USB ports and a SD Card slot in the console compartment. Plus you could add your own custom routes to the Nav with a .gpx file. That came in handy for the local CCA driving tours.

The Burmester system is slightly below the BO in the M5. It might be due to the M5's sound insulation in the cabin. Both are great in my opinion though.

For the suspension, of course the AMG is overall more harsh even in Comfort mode. Comparing similar suspension modes against the M5 I would say the M5 feels more compliant over bumps.

Steering wheel feel (to the touch) I would rate dead even. I had the alcantara-like covered wheel in the C63s with the racing stripe. But while driving, the hydraulic steering in the M5 is obviously better vs the EPS in the Merc. I feel like I need to get back in the gym after trying Sport Plus (yikes).

The obligatory exhaust note of the AMG is what seduced me in the first place. I definitely miss that. I wish that every performance arm would not underestimate what those organic pops and bangs do for the driver. The M5 simply can't touch it in stock form.

The transmissions felt within the same league to me (MCT vs DCT). There's much hate thrown the AMGs way about how the transmission holds it back. I simply disagree. The shifts in the AMG are very quick and keeps the power down when you need it. It just feels like an organic car rather than a synthetic one. These two cars are the first I've had with electronically assisted locking differentials, and you can feel it too. It feels great to feel the rears lock up with great quickness vs a mechanical diff. You really feel planted in corners if you don't overload the traction.

Did I miss anything?

Thank you for the detailed review.

Despite not a lightweight, does C63S feel more tossable or handles better?

How is the interior quality compared assuming u have full leather in the M5?

M5 improves the steering feel and makes suspension harsher in CP form.

Is this the 13 from BMW of Towson?

I recently test drove it, as I am potentially in the market for one.

Great car....congrats!

Definitely. The C63S is more tossable and handles very much like an M3 imo (flame suit on) lol.

I would have to say the interior quality in the AMG gives you that ridiculously expensive white glove feel. Of course, I had the Edition 1 package, so the interior was the highest trim. I read somewhere that the red carbon fiber weave was picked from the highest 10% of CF and the other pieces were discarded. It really was that nice.

Here are a couple interior shots of my old car.

MB interiors have always been high quality but lacking on looks for me, this is a big step up although what is that clock doing? Why do manufactures think we want a mantle piece crono and not stick with a digital display more in keeping... its worse than a Porsche wort!

I'd say the MB looks more modern from every angle to the bmw F series.

Why did you make the change as road tests say the merc is faster and handles better?

I think that is the E63S going up against the M5, not the C63S. The E is also AWD (depending on market) and C is not. C63 -> M3/M4 and E63-> M5

Not quite. The analog clock is IWC Schaffhausen. It's actually moderately expensive. MB does to this to retain part of the AMG decor from the original 63.

I don't go by road tests. Just by what I like at the time.

Nope, pictured above is the 2015 AMG C63S that I owned just a few days ago.

Whoa! Just a few days? What was so unbearable about it?

Unbearable? I didn't say that. I had it almost a year.

Just had the opportunity to get an M5 that's all. The AMG C63 is incredible if you ask me.

The only fail I see with that C63 interior is the COMAND screen Ipad look. It looks like an afterthought. I know they wanted to bring it up to eye level for safety reasons, but it just looks terrible. Almost like it should be detachable. Other than that it is a huge step up from previous generations. I had a 2009 and 2012 C63. That M156 engine was sublime!

What are the specs on the C63S you just traded in? How many miles?

I just got back from my second test drive of one and it's a great car! I think I might even prefer it over the F80.....

Well, maybe.
