Traction Issues
Just picked up my M5 and while the tires aren't new (roughly 50% tread), I'm very surprised that my car spins the tires through 2nd gear. Gotta say the traction control probably saved my butt as I wasn't expecting the back end to come loose in a straight line in 2nd gear. It was roughy 45F and dry...this normal?

Even if it is dry...Tyres need to be brought up to temperature and even then, some gentle throttle control is still required... In the wet, it will happen in 3rd as well When tires are up to temp, my advice would be to go into MDM mode so you have a better feal for what the car is doing and then just plant it. |

It's to be expected. Unless you can get the Michelin's up to about 110 F (difficult to do when the ambient temp is 45 F ) then they are going to be a bit hard.
Even so, the M5 has enough torque to get them rotating in the summer. |

Thanks for the replies.
Interesting...was considering a tune but it seems hard to believe that one would get anything extra out of the car at relatively "sane" speeds. |

Shows the need for AWD before you need to add power. Tried to race a POS car this am and lost because I had traction control on. All it did was flash yellow when I floored it instead of take off. The next M5 HAS to have AWD. It's ridiculous.

Normal. In the summer in Alberta (25C/77F) spinning the tires at the top end of 1nd gear (100kph) going into 2nd is normal if you are in S3 and shift near red line.
Once you get below 5C/40F winter tires are a must! |

Totally agree!!! Love this car, but it is simply too overpowered for RWD. The power is just a waste half the time. Even on the highway at speed the back end wants to break away. Fun, yes. A waste of forward power, yes!
I don't want to hear about "throttle modulation", etc. When a Civic with a beer can muffler can take you off the line (in MDM or not), there is a traction problem, not a "driver" problem. I will be the first on the list for my next generation, AWD M5! Anyone remember that hilarious thread I started about 6 months back. All about RWD and traction issues? fun! |

Cold summer tires would spin even with AWD given the amount of power. You can do the same thing with the AMG-S E63. 70% of 570hp being sent to the rear wheels is still a lot even if 30% is going to the front wheels.

I understand that you want to jump off the line faster and that's why the AWD is designed for people like you, but not everything is about off the line or 0-60! Usually AWD has more drivetrain loss than RWD and that's why you can see M5/M6 win most of the rolling races with AWD cars with the same or even more power/torque than M5/M6. You can search and find tons of videos over internet. E63 AMG 4 Matic /Nissan GTR/ Ferrari FF/ R8,... These AWD cars are monster but still looser because of huge power of RWD M5/M6! I have challenged many cars (from standstill) and have lost most of the first 50-100 feet but after that, I was the one who walked away! Be patient, I'm sure the next generation of M5/M6 will be offered with optional AWD and you will be happy To me, this RWD monster is fun to drive and yes it's not the car that everybody can sit behind the wheel and floor the gas and expect that car jumps like a rocket. As a side note, I don't call it overpowered RWD. Still you can see lots of people here in this forum tune their cars to get more power/torque P.S, I guess (if I'm not mistaken) I remember that thread! people got so defended!

Always been confusd about this but MDM mode allows for more play but still kicks traction control on? Traction control off is the only way to have to computer interference?

I think these 300+ treadwear hard tires are to blame. Get a set of proper sub 180s and I think it'll make all the difference. Just haven't killed these enough yet to justify a softer shorter milage tire

Again, not all M Owners are M Drivers. Know your skill and know your car and you will be able to extract maximum performance out of your M. Sorry to come accross a bit harsh but it's reality. This car needs a skilled driver to perform. Which is a good thing
