Competition package - cast wheels?

Is it trup that cp wheels are cast wheels? They are 5 lbs heavier each and cost less than the regular 20" wheels? I dont understand how this can be since the words "competition" and "cast wheel" usually don't go hand in hand. I'm very disappointed now, last thing I want is 20 inch wheels to crack. Forged wheels are so much better, I dont have a single crack in any of my M3 wheels after hitting so many potholes.

Unfortunately true.
They look great IRL so that's why I use 'em as a winterset.

I think the E9x M3 ZCP wheels were cast as well. The standard 19" wheel option was forged... similar weird scenario.

that really is disappointing. why would BMW do that? improve steering, handling, increase hp and then add on 10kg more weight through 'competition' pack wheels..?

I have done the same thing. The 601's are shod with my winter tires and my HRE P101's or an their way to me know for my summer settup.

Still, I mean paying 7.3k for competition package and using the 20" wheels for snow tires is a bit too much in my opinion. Snow or summer, the cast wheels, especially this size, is a big no-no. Look at the thread I linked and how the guy already has cracks after 200 miles. You don't really have to drive this car hard to have that problem either.

Really do not understand the thought on this, very disappointed. If it was up to me I'd keep the 343s with the Comp Package

My M5 CP was ordered from the factory with the black 343M wheels. They are a no cost option in combination with comp package. Best wheel option for the M5 in my opinion.

Comp package wheels for the E46 / CSL and E9x were all cast while the stock 19" wheels like mentioned above were forged.

You can't make sense out of this decision by BMW (other than not spending the time and money).

I reluctantly went with the 601s and am happy so far. The only advantage is that I like the look a little better on darker cars. Almost went with the 343Ms and CCBs to save weight where it counts but then drove one with both and really couldn't tell the difference under normal driving conditions.

I don't track the car and believe that this would be a great reason to go for the lighter wheel and brake options.

I live in northeastern US and am also concerned about bending wheels. Time will tell. My last BMW was a 750i with 20" Style 32 wheels. I believe these wheels were also cast. This was my daily driver for almost 4 years, and I never bent a wheel (and do remember going over some nasty potholes).

I know the comp rims in E9x M3 are flow formed which are much stronger than cast wheels. Still not as good as forged.

I am not sure if 601's are flow formed or not.

First set of forged wheels I've owned. Besides the design I think forged wheels look sweet up close. That machined look can't be beat.
