did some testing on OEM valve opening & closure.
cold start: valve closed at idle after driving & engine warmed up: valve open at idle tried several times, it's the same result. if that's the case, installing exhaustmeister won't much of a difference. how do those valves actually works ? |

I tested out your theory and it did not hold in my case. Driving around all day yesterday doing errands, so car was fully warmed up. Strated her up, hot the "open" button on the EM and the tone deepened, so my valves must have been closed prior to that.

It seems US cars may be different than others in the valve operation. Pretty sure I've seen other non US owners report the valve remaining open after warm up. If so, this should be able to be coded.

Here is my dilemma.
Being a non US M5, it seems like the valves stay open after warm up, but there is no way to know whether they close or not during driving. Assuming they stay open, it doesn't make sense to install the ExhaustMeister (which I've ordered already & should get it this week), as the valves are open anyway. Don't know what I should do. Any fellow member here can get info from BMW on how the valves actually operate, US spec vs EU spec ? |

- When the engine is off, the VALVES are both CLOSED. - When I do the cold start the valves AT FIRST STAY CLOSED !! - After about 2 min. the valves FINALLY OPEN AND STAY OPEN (in idle). - Changing the engine in Sport or Sport+ during this time has NO EFFECT at all. - While driving with windows down the exterior sound is really good - in my opinion with more base than the non-CP exhaust. Changing from Efficient to sport or Sport+ has NO EFFECT on the sound of the exhaust (only on the active sound system in the interior). But I can't figure out whether the valves are closed or open while driving. - Even after driving for some time, the VALVES STAY OPEN. I'm very confused now. So, do the valves close at any time while driving, respectively in which situation?? Are they always open? If that is the case that would mean that the ExhaustMeister would have no effect on the sound at all (since the valves are already open). Could it be that the EU M5 with CP already is programmed by BMW to keep the valves always open (after warming up)? And is there a difference to US M5 with CP? In the end that would mean that I have ordered the ExhaustMeister for nothing!! And in that case I would offer my ExhaustMeister to anyone of you for a good price. So, does anybody know more facts that could help to solve this problem?? |

I've got an idea:
In Munich I know one of the M master mechanics who is one of the best and a friend of mine. I'll ask him to explain me the valve control system and if there are differences between EU and US M5 with CP. Maybe he can tell whether the ExhaustMeister will have a positive effect on the sound or if there are unknown issues that could be a problem. I'll post it as soon as I have the information... |

You could always use the EM to close the valve if you want to be slient and don't want to attract attention =)

I have the LCI M5 and wired open the valves, it makes an improved sound all the time on my car. Sport or Sport+ makes no difference, the sound is good for what it is IMO. Not too loud.

In fact, in idle the valves are open. But the valves usually close while driving and they open depending from the throttle and the RPM !!! This means that the ExhaustMeister should make the sound better by opening the valves while driving (even with Comp pack)! As soon as the EM arrives, I will install it and post my results again. |

This is not accurate. The EM will not force them closed. With the EM activated, they remain open at all times. With the EM de-activated or off, it is simply as if the EM is not installed and the valves open and close "normally".

Have you installed yours yet ? Mine arrived with the unit inside the metal case coming loose (supposedly glued to the inside of the metal case, but it didn't hold). I had to open up the case & fix it with heavy duty double sided tape. Didn't have the time to install it to the car yet. |
