Thumbs down Blew up my F10 M5 last week :(

Hi guys,

Longtime lurker - blew up my 2013 M5 last week - been on holiday locally in uk with wife and kids but came back to see it sat on drive looking mean but also knowing it’s dead inside.

Friend invited me to join him at a Silverstone for a track day, got brake fluid, coolant and oil changed day before - drove down just fine.

Warm up laps all fine - filled up with half a tank of fuel on site - 3rd-ish proper lap, felt a slight hesitation coming out of corner - nothing much.

Then on straight, a bang, a few BMW bongs - oil pressure loss, coolant loss, drive moderately.

Immediately pulled over, car had turned off and into neutral.

Steam from side, recovered to pits.

Dripping - oil and water - not good.

Apparently dumped a 2 meter wide slick up the straight which they had to briefly close the morning session for to clean up.

Recovered home (what a fun day!) and removed vanity panel under engine - lots of small metal bits and some larger chunks scattered on tray - spoke to local specalist on phone - he suspects possibly oil pump has gone and rod through side of block.

Car had done 120,000 but had brakes all done and tyres not long ago, plus new injectors, plugs and a proactive DCT fluid change in last 24 months - so was feeling confident in the mechanicals.

Now not very sure what to do - am in fortunate position that it’s not financially crippling - I had some money aside for this sort of thing / a car upgrade etc but would much prefer it not be spent like this!!

Issue I have is I loved the spec!! B&O sound, soft close doors, HUD, sports seats, red leather, individual black with red flake exterior, even have a separate set of winter wheels etc

First place I spoke to said expect to spend £15k-£20k on a new block and labor - given extent of damage and age of engine - likely lots of other elements likely to be replaced etc

Copart’s version of ‘we buy any car’ offered me £6k which feels criminal, seats / wheels / lights have to be worth that easy.

Issue I’ve got is do I:

Sell broken - send to a ‘salvage’ type auction
Pay to fix to sell - spend ??? (£15-20k) and sell - can’t fetch £20k so feels like wrong move
Pay to fix and keep - risk drama of gearbox going bang next day etc

Arrrggh!!!!

My suggestion would be to contact other engine rebuild factors, there's one bmsservices in Wolverhampton and I've seen others that offer pick up, clean out swarf from parts and rebuild with fit service for under 10 grand with 1 year warranty.

Sorry to hear. Personally, I'm in the camp that if the car wasn't wrecked, it can (and should) be rebuilt. Your best bet is a rebuilt engine versus a used one, if you could even find a used one in the UK.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you do.

Appreciate the support - any ideas on where to source a block other than eBay if mine has a gaping hole in?

Will try the recommended place in Wolverhampton on Monday

It's just a place I saw advertised in Wolverhampton tho I don't know about them. If it is a hole in block as you think then yeah it's going to cost more as not on an exchange or direct rebuild basis.

My e60 blew a piston 2 months back
Very depressing

For me it made sense to rebuild
Its worth more and would hate to scrap it

Take advantage of the situation and put a built motor in it.

I wonder if you would have noticed something earlier and avoided disaster if our dash had a proper oil pressure gague.
