Downpipes? Cat-Back? Or both..

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello Gents -

Long time lurker, new to M5 Post but certainly not new to forums.

I just purchased a 2013 F10 M5 about a month ago. I'm coming from a Supercharged B7 S4 Avant & an E90 M3. This car is absolutely magical, and I'm in love, however, I find myself wanting in the exhaust department. I love V8 noise and have an affinity to the loud sort....

I've searched quite a bit, I'm still inconclusive. Would any of you suggest a pair of catted down-pipes to get more sound out of the car, or will it be relatively tame? How about just adding a cat-back system? What happens when you do both?

Edit: Obligatory Intro Pics

Um, that's a 2013 F10. Note the LED front turn signals and the rear taillight light tube pattern.

I'm going to start with a catted downpipe, and go from there.

RPI sounds unreal..

I just got the AMS catted DPs to go with my Eisenmann Sport. For me the sound is great. But if you like real loud than you'll probably want to go with the Eisenmann Race, Meistershaft or RPI.

Is the CEL going to cause any issues?

I pulled the trigger on some Cat-Less Downpipes. Just want to make sure I won't confuse the ECU into making fuel trim changes.

Yes catless will trigger cel and cause some issues at under hard full acceleration .

You will need a CAN tool that is no longer sold by BMS. Or just drive moderately to avoid the malfunction cel.

I am sure the guys with the catless will chime on too.

You gain roughly 50 whp midrange with catless vs 26-29 whp with catted downpipes.
The beauty of catted dp's is that you wont have to deal with a CEL and drivetrain malfunction caused by air/fuel ratio that's thrown off spec by having so much more airflow.
On the down side it costs twice as much so pick your poison.
As couple suggested I would start with a downpipe. The best bang for the buck, aside from BMS piggyback tune.
Exhausts dont really add that much power, but in the sound category you will definitely hear the difference.
I started with AMS catless DP, had it for 6 months and then wanted more sound. Bought a Meisterschaft exhaust with valve control and I love the sound now.
I get thumbs up every where I go because most people dont expect a luxury sedan to sound like a LS7 on crack. PM me for more info.

Well I got some Agency Power Cat-Less Downpipes and I won't be using them. I'm going with the catted option due to California smog. So I guess if anyone wants these cat-less ones, feel free to reach out via PM.

Green I'll probably go the same route you did with the catted DP's. The Meistershaft and RPI are on my short list.
