Added an M5 to the Family
My wife and I had been discussing selling off the E90 M3 for an F10 M5. We test drove one, and fell in love with the shear amount of power that the car had to offer. So, we started our online search for an LCI model. I found what I believe was the perfect car for us - a Singapore Grey Metallic 2014 Competition Package DCT with Silverstone full leather. Driver assistance, Executive, and Lighting Packages, as well. 4500 miles on the odometer. Apparently, one of the owner's of CarMax decided that he wanted a Porsche Cayenne instead, which left us with one hell of a deal.
We agreed to terms over the phone, and bought our one-way tickets from FL to VA. Then, I became saddened by the whole ordeal. Not buyer's remorse - something different. I love my M3. Though having two ///M cars in the same family makes little sense, I told my wife that I couldn't, in my right mind, get rid of a car which I loved so much. After some discussion, and some good budgeting, we decided to go with the M8 - I was keeping the M3! Off we go to Virginia, which is not completely foreign to us; we bought our M3 sight (physically) unseen from an independent dealer in Atlanta, and we were completely happy with the result. This was really happening. With very little time spent at the Porsche dealer, we were on our way. We could have come straight home, but we decided to take about a 7 hour detour to the Tail of the Dragon. For only 11 miles worth of road (at only about 30 mph), this seemed like a waste. But times like this are about the memories. And this will stay with me forever. This is a big car! Much bigger than my M3. And MUCH more powerful. We really didn't push the car too much on our road trip, since we really didn't know the area or the car (or the cops, for that matter). But as a cruiser, I couldn't have asked for anything better. Those miles seemed like nothing. And I have driven halfway across the contiguous US in a Ford Escort, so I have some comparison. The buyer's remorse did eventually settle in, after we got home, though. Was this necessary? This car just wasn't as "fun" as my 6MT M3, it felt big, and almost too luxurious for my taste. Did I make a mistake? After the past couple of months with this M5, I can tell you that no mistake was made. This car is absolutely brilliant! My problem was that I was comparing it to a normally aspirated beast of a car - one built with a very purposeful design (and with exhaust mods, pulley, and tune, a harmonically loud and responsive one). The M5 is not that. And that's the entire purpose. I have read many people complaining that the F10 M5 looks too similar to standard F10 5 series, while the M3 screams to look at me! E28, E34, E39, E60, F10. Note that none of them are begging for attention. There is a subtlety to them, very discreet. Not a bad thing, and exactly what the M5 is about. Each are monsters in its own way, though, when the driver is intent on driving the car that way. After some reflection, this M5 is near perfect, and I am very satisfied with my purchase. This car's dichotomy between extravagance and unadulterated hedonism is astounding, when that M button is pressed. The turbos, of course, mute the sound, but it is still a very aggressive and intoxicating noise (at least with the CP exhaust). I don't plan on upgrading anything on this car. I truly believe that BMW did an exceptional job with this car, and I am loving it. It helps that I still get to drive my M3, though... |

Thanks for the thorough write up of you experience, it was extremely informative and entertaining to read. Having owned the E60 M5 and E63 M6, and currently trying to sell my 911 TT so that I may return to the ///M family, your post have made this difficult decision a bit easier. Beautiful rides you got, enjoy them in good health!!

Great car. Great write up. The 7 hour detour might be much to get to ride the Dragon but on a bike that is some of the best riding in the world! I'm thinking about the same detour this fall in my M5. Congrats!

Not concerned with CPO, and don't even know if a Porsche dealer would offer that. I let my M3 warranty expire and I've been fortunate to his point. High dollar repairs (and any possible mods) are completely expected. Paying the ///M tax, unfortunately. |

Oh man I'm jealous!! My ideal choice. I was pretty close to going this route. I didn't want to get rid of my S65 M3. I just can't do it for whatever reason. It's still sooo much fun. Told myself I wasn't going to get rid of it even when I was looking at LP-560 before knowing the wife was pregnant. Ultimately ordered the new big boi range as a soccer mom car lol.

Did you buy the car from Euroclassics outside of Richmond? If so, I saw it after it was traded a couple months ago. I was drooling over that color combination!
Good call on keeping the E92 M3...I do miss how easy it was to fling mine around vs the M5. Congrats and enjoy! |

As we pulled away from Euroclassics, I felt as if the Panameras were breathing a sigh of relief that the better looking sedan was finally off of their lot! |
