Nearly all generations of the M5 (E28 missing) lined up for a rare look together, and the group thought it fun to do a little exhaust sound-off. Here's how the E34, E39, E60 and F10 M5 sound against each other.

Too bad both of my M5's weren't there to properly represent what each is truly capable of sounding like. I still swoon over the looks of the E39 though.

E60 M5 by a mile. It will probably go down as THE best sounding BMW ever in my opinion.

Yeah it pretty much is. It is the only engine from ///M to be purely derived from BMW's involvement with Formula 1.

The S85 in the E60 is the greatest-sounding engine that BMW has ever created. Sounds like a damn F1 car.

the E60/E63 m5/m6 v10 engines sound the best... can't beat the naturally aspirated engine.

the F10 m5 sounds pretty weak sadly. luckily performance is not.

I gotta say that E39 sounds mean... wow. The E60 and F10 seem a bit muffled in comparison.
