BMW M5 exhaust sound battle: E34 vs E39 vs E60 vs F10

Can you imagine how nuts we would have went if a 5 liter NA V10 was announced for the F8x M3/4...Just crazy to think about considering the small turbo motors that are coming out now.

+1. Considered getting one when I was cross shopping it with the E92. The engine is wonderful, just not sure it's in the right car.

I can see myself owning a 6MT E60 M5 in the distant future though. That's a cool car.

Yep it's all going downhill from here on out in the sound department for all future ///M's. Here's what a straightpiped M4 sounds like for example:

Nope. The E39 is definitely not stock. The E60 has an Eisenmann on it, and the F10 has maybe an Eisenmann Sport section 3 exhaust on it. The tips on the F10 are 100mm and look like the Eisenmann's but I could be wrong. I can't tell with the E34.

Actually no. The S14 was from DTM not Formula 1.

DTM became one of the most popular forms of motorsports in Europe. In 1987, the first year of its introduction in DTM, the BMW S14 engine won the championship right away. It was simply a 2.5 L inline four cylinder, dual overhead cam, 16 valve engine. It wasn't that the engine was outright dominant - It won its first championship without even winning a race! What makes the S14 so impressive is how similar the engine is literally derived from the road going based 2.3 liter version. It's also probably one of the most recognizable versions of the true spirit of the M division of BMW.

Yes, but the S14 used the M10 block, which was used in F1. Nothing from the S85 was actually used in F1.

Not that is one of best sounding bimmer, but it's one of best sounding car. With custom exhaust it's porn at finest.

I have to say the thing I like about "great sounding" motors is what they sound like at idle. The heavy revving sounds they make are also appealing to me, but only when the car is actually moving. I don't much care for the sound of any of them sitting still as in the video, although I liked the E39 best of the bunch and as presented.

Fair enough.

It's the low bass rumble that I really like, and it disappears during high revs, making it hard for me to know which I like best.
