Dealership says 2.5 Liters per 1K miles is "Normal"
Hi All,
Per the BMW franchise dealership technician: "Up to 2.5 liters of oil per 1K miles is considered acceptable" is what I was told. I find this a bit strange. I recently purchased a 2013 M5 and shortly after purchase the oil light came on. I topped it off with a liter of 0W-30 BMW oil. About 400 miles later, the light came back on and I brought it to the dealer for review. This type of consumption didn't seem normal to me. Long story short, the dealership conducted an "oil consumption test" and said they didn't see any change in oil (over 130 miles) after topping it off with 2 liters. Which makes sense considering its effectively topped off one liter above the "max." The dealer wrote on my paper that if it the light comes back on within 1K miles to bring it back they would work with a BMWNA technician to further diagnose the car. This consumption is unacceptable to me. 25 liters of top offs between oil changes is ridiculous. How can BMW find this acceptable? |

I dont believe thats acceptable. I think its max 1 qt (or ~1 liter) per 750 miles is "acceptable". Do your research for hard numbers and get back to them...

Thanks for the feedback all. I'm wondering if this is something worth escalating to BMWNA? The dealership doesn't seem to have much to say other than to keep topping off.
Any thoughts on how to approach this? |

Found this link:
https://blog.bavauto.com/16943/bmw-h...-si-b11-03-13/ Wow, seems like you're at the limits of "acceptable", assuming the M5 falls under motorsport engines. I'd drive it hard for the next 1000 miles and burn 3 liters, and raise the issue again.

Apexlocator - I saw that same link too. Pretty ridiculous that 2.5 liters per 1000 miles is considered acceptable
I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome. I'm curious what my options are if this gets escalated to BMWNA? New valve seals? Crankcase ventilation measures? |

Change your oil brand. I've heard certain brands burn more so than others. Mine doesn't burn any oil between oil changes (10k kms) I use Mobil 1 0-40 European formula.....I know, I know...it doesn't have the BMW designation...It did in 2014, and the Formulation of the oil hasn't changed a whole lot according to the Mobil 1 folks.
Just switching to a different 'approved' brand may work well also. |
