Half Shaft Death

Well, I knew that the half shafts were on borrowed time with running the drag radials at the track. Finally grenaded the driver's side CV joint on Friday. Crazy launch too, the car hooked HARD! All summer the DA has sucked, mid 3000's to high 4000's. Friday night the air temp was about 11C and the DA was about 1600-1800 when I snapped the shaft.

Assuming that isn't covered by warranty?

Did you at least get a good ET and 60ft time?

Both BMW dealerships in town know I drag race the car. I have been up front with the one I am taking it to. So we will see, most likely this is going to be out of pocket.

If I make it out to the track again this year (2 more events left), I will ask the guy I lined up with if I registered a 60 foot time. I think it would have been in the 1.6s.

~7000km

Boost set at +3.0.

But I was running very sticky Mickey Thompson Drag Radials. Probably at least +40 passes on DRs.

40+ passes on DR's, yeah ok that is A LOT! Lol! You had me worried there for a minute. I don't launch my car at all practically. I've only ever used Launch Control once and that was just to see what it felt like for fun.

Please let us know how much something like is going to cost. Hope you get it all sorted out soon, so you can get back out there before winter hits. Thanks.

I am taking guess at 40ish. Been to the track several times with this car, and usually several passes in a night. I will have to count up the time slips.

SA says new shaft is about $1400, and with labour about $2500 total. 3 weeks from Germany is what they have quoted. I've asked if they can air freight it.

So this is instructive for the rest of us. I think rubber is probably cheaper than this repair and I think we can still get good trap speeds with 2.0s 60ft which we can do without LC or DRs. If I can get a 2.0s 60ft, anyone can, I have a lead foot, LOL! That is what I love about LC on the porsche, it's perfect for my lead foot. It is a challenge to get these cars off the line straight and fast, if you waste some rubber learning, so be it. Good luck with getting the repair done quickly.

2.0s is pretty easy with stock tires once you figure your car out, but I am trying to pull every last MPH I can now (plus I still want an ET glory run). I am going to limit the car at the track now to when I only add new mods. I wanted to get a solid run (Low DA) with the BMS set at 3.0 and then I was going to bump it to 6.0 with fuel and be done with it until I added M6Beast's Intake and meth, run it again at 6.0 and retire from drag racing this car. I might put the 20" Nittos DRs back on, they were a bit more forgiving than the MTs.

I feel your pain on the delay. 3 weeks will put us into the white stuff. I haven't had my car since mid August waiting on parts in Edmonton.

Have you looked in to line lock to ease up on the rear axles in the water box? I am not sure what the electronics would do perhaps nothing if in DTC off.

Hope your back on the roads of Alberta soon!

Yeah, 3 weeks had me a bit concerned that I would be moving the car in winter. My nice warm, free winter storage is a 2 hour drive. A line lock did cross my mind. I am barely using the brakes during the burnout, so it isn't like I am standing on the brakes. Something I will probably look into when I have some more time.

How did you launch with MT's? I have about 80 passes this year on same tires and now you got me worried about the half shaft?

DSC off, D3 and just floor it off idle. About 21-22 psi in the tires.
Time permitting, my winter project will be to look into aftermarket shafts. See if something can be built with stronger CV joints.
