I remember the days of the e39 poster in my office.. dreams.. what a classic. However give credit where due, the new F10 is a home run - I stare at them all the time on the road.

I really hate how the F10 tails remind me of a 2003 G35 sedan

Funny, I saw an E39 M5 the day the F10 M5 debuted on the street here in LA and I thought the new F10 M5 was a direct descendant of the E39 M5. It's like they skipped the the E60 M5 all together.

I loveee the e39
One of my friends had an immaculate one before it was totalled, and being a passenger in the car brought a smile to my face everytime I was in it.
It is a truly timeless design that still turned heads.
That being said, the f10 is growing on me each and every day, and I already prefer it to the e60, although I personally like the e60 as well.
BMW just can't seem to mess up the M3's and M5's

I disagree with the E39 being a grandpa as well. It is older yes, but geriatric no.

My dad used to have a E39 M5 when I was younger. I remember riding in it and thought it couldn't get any better than this. Truly a timeless classic.

To summarize many statements on this thread - the e39 is the definition of the ultimate driving machine.

I think the e39 is what actually made me a BMW enthusiast. Although I never owned the M I did buy a 528 and later a 540. I never could get my hands on a 540 sport or M due to scarce availability. Anyway, both were excellent and I miss them.

These are by far my two favorite M5s from a design perspective, with the F10 > E39 (by the slimmest margin)

Ill count myself as one of the people who was really won over to BMW in part by the E39 M5, I will say that I *think* Jason didnt mean the car is meant for "Grandpas" but would be a Grandpa in lineage. Meaning, if the F10 is the son, E60 would be dad, E39 would be grandpa, E34 would be great grandfather. Thats what I think he meant..
