correct... it can take (worst case) up to a month to get through EPA for M cars as well as the diesel cars.. The car is not being held until the launch date by bmw.. that is simply not true

Some dealers are saying the cars are being held others are saying they are not. Not sure who has the right info outside of BMWNA

Does anyone know how exactly the EPA would test a car?

Do they transport the unfortunate early-arrival cars that get selected for this testing to their lab in Michigan, or can they do it somewhere closer to the port?

From the link above it looks like they use pre prods

It says that the manufacturers typically use pre prods in the testing that they do. It doesn't say that the cars tested by the EPA are pre prods. At any rate, there are no EPA numbers for the M5 at this point...

My dealer just called me, they said my car is on the boat and will be at the port in New Jersey on the 25th. The wait is killing me

Did he say how long to pull car off ship, go through VPC, and transport to dealer? Looks like you could have it by August.

It's usually quite quick. Last year my car cleared customs and VPC in 2-3 days and was at performance center within 5 days.

The unknown here is if cars get quarantined pending EPA testing.

Mine notified me of the same information as well. It's on a vessel called Florida Highway and can be tracked at marinetraffic.com

They haven't heard anything about a hold untill 9/1 and regarding the EPA status, my salesman saw in person a small fleet of M5's already at the performance center's over here. Who knows what the deal with the EPA is.

I think all the cars currently in the US are 2012, not 2013. Also, I believe that only cars sold to the public need EPA, CARB, etc.

No clear answer on what will happen... Maybe the government agencies will just take the test results provided by BMW for the M5 and won't insist on testing themselves (but then why hasn't this happened so far?) Maybe there will be a delay until they test cars provided by BMW. Or maybe they'll pick some customer cars at the port and send them for testing (I hope not).

Dealer just informed me that they are able to input black grills & side trim pieces to be installed at the port upon arrival. However no pricing yet.
