I haven't heard it on E60 M5 and E63 M6, which model are you referring to that had it?

So dropped the car off for its 2000k break in service and the SA told me that the car has a 'campaign' on it. They need to do something to the rear sway bar or anti roll bar. Apparently being done to all F10Ms. I will pick the car up later today and let you know whether it has fixed the noise issue. They are also going to take a look at that as well. After Singularity's experience I am not hopeful but will keep you posted.

Confirmed. Spring coils equipped on current M5 F10 can't handle uneven roads, cobblestone and road bumps. BMW will release new spring coils in December 2012.

Does everyone except Aussie F10M and myself drive on perfect roads? All cars have this defect, just not all cars drive on perfect roads. This cost me a few months of disassembling the car at BMW service and driving with friends in the trunk to find the sound, but I hope it helps anyone who is lost trying to figure out the reason and wait for new spring coils to be released.

Aussie F10M what's your status with this?

Why can't BMW put the new spring coils for the July production for the U.S.? Why do they have to wait until December? So does that mean that all new M5 produced before that date have to be recalled to have those spring coils changed?

That's the estimation until they test and release new coil springs. Until then we drive with clunk bung sounds from the rear.

^ Probably due to logistics reason. those parts already enroute to the factory and the need to use up those parts, besides, the revised spring coils will need to be re-tested before mass production to correct the issue.

Seems so. Many owners are complaining about it, even the guy in my town who owns another M5 F10 "that didn't have any sound and didn't want to get in contact" called BMW service complaining about it and asking for progress on my car.

They explained that springs aren't stiff enough to push outward so there is always a gap on top of it, if you drive on something or fall into something you hear clung/bung/dong like you have a loose wrench in the trunk. Yes, it's loud enough to annoy anyone who drives on cobblestones/road pits/slight obstacles. Can be heard from outside even.

We made a test recommended by BMW by putting 3 passengers on my car's backseat and I did a test driving and nobody heard the clunk anymore.

I also still have the sound from time to time. Not so loud, but it´s definitely there.

What should I do about it? Will there be a worldwide recall?

Loudness and frequency of sound depends on road conditions, you're lucky to be driving on good roads but as you said it's definitely there. From what I know is that they expect to have them ready by December 2012, but maybe you can ask your dealership or maybe if more people are bothered BMW would feel the pressure or urgency for a recall. From my understanding a worldwide recall is to be expected.

Wait until us New Yorkers start taking delivery on our M5s in September. Our roads are so bad the rear-ends may actually drop off the car.

It is however reasonable to assume that BMW will install the new spring coils in all new cars before they get around to replacing the coils on the vehicles that have already been delivered.

Thanks for the update Singularity - it is much appreciated.

What has happened with me ? Not much. They did not look at the rear of the car when I took it in. I am taking it in tomorrow to have the bushes on the rear sway bar (I think) replaced as part of a campaign and they were going to try and track down the noise then. They were going to start a case with BMW - the technician last time could clearly hear the noise and described it as concerning, although not a safety issue. I will find out more at the end of the day tomorrow.

Swaybar bushings? So that´s an issue too?

Singularity / Aussie - when were your cars produced?

Mine was produced second week of march. Then there were some upgrades, I was told.

Congrats m5driver77, better to open a new topic so everyone can see

Aussie F10M, please write more about why were sway bar bushings have to be replaced? Are they reported to be making noise too? My car was produced on January 19.

No, the bushes were not causing the issue. Apparently in the early production car some of the sway bar bushes were installed upside down. So they are doing a campaign to replace them. It is a separate and unrelated issue to the noise in the rear.

I would be surprised if BMW would do a recall on the cars. Reputationally that would be tough for them. I suspect they will fix it on a case by car basis.

I will be sure to print out this thread and take it to my dealer tomorrow.

Appreciate the information exchange guys - thanks !

It is really uncharacteristic of BMW to have erred and not put into test the M5 in rough roads. The only thing I can think of is in BMWs attempt to cut costs, they started using inferior components. But then, even with the use of inferior components, BMW should have thoroughly tested the new M5 cars. I am now having second thoughts on immediately acquiring an M5 and maybe sit it out for a while until the quirks are sorted out.

mama told me to never order first model year but as always I ignored her. My "clunker" comes in a couple of weeks. Now that I am sensitized to this problem it will drive me crazy. Mama I should have listened!

Ok, so my dealer just told me the car popped up in their system as needing the new coils. They will be issued from the factory in December this year. Not a safety issue, only comfort issue.

It is identical to what you were told Singularity.

At least a solution is on the way. Thanks BMW !

I would just like to emphasise at this point that this noise/issue has in no way affected my view of how awesome this car is.

And, much better response from BMW than their response in relation to the infamous DCT lag issue (which was a safety issue no less) on my early build M3.
