In the market for a F10 M5. Need some input.

Hello everyone! New here, I'm in the Detroit area. Well, I had a 330ci ZHP Coupe that was very well maintained and I never intended on selling it or getting rid of it. I just had crossed 200k miles and it still ran like a champ, took care of all preventive maintenance, new bumper, paintwork, even went all out and bought brand new genuine headlights. It was my baby, but unfortunately some idiot hit me a couple weeks ago and it had a lot of body damage and it won't be getting repaired. It hurts but I'm just going to have to let go of it. Anyway, I've always loved the F10 M5's. I'm currently looking at a few, my only worry is the maintenance. It will not be my daily driver and I don't plan on doing any modifications to the engine at all. I want to keep everything stock aside from a couple cosmetic features. Any input on how worried I should be? Currently the few I'm looking at have anywhere from 40-50k miles on it. I don't ever "dog" or rag on the cars that I own so just curious on what kind of problems I'm looking at going forward. I already have my mechanics or strictly work on BMW's and they're way cheaper than the dealer so I won't be taking it to the dealer at all unless I really have to. Anyway, sorry for rambling on but just wanted some input from you guys since i'm sure a lot of you are very familiar with these cars. Should I pull the trigger or no? Let me know, thanks!

Sorry to hear about the accident. Probably the only top issues that have any sort high price tag would be the turbo coolant lines and the rod bearings. The turbo coolant lines rubber components tend to degrade from the heat generated from the hot V engine configuration.

The rod bearings are pretty much a jump ball. They may last for 100k+ miles or wear out at 30k miles. If you have them replaced with an after market and studiously change the oil you should have a nice long term ownership experience.

Sorry to hear about your e46. I have '04 M3, and it's been a great car. My F10 is my daily driver, 50 miles a day work commute. It's been rock solid so far. I have race cats and a tune, otherwise stock engine. Maintenance items are not inexpensive so it's not a cheap car to rack up miles on. But for me, life's too short for me to spend 90+ minutes commuting in a boring car. There are horror stories online about the S63, I considered them, but decided to go for it. I've never had engine problems from my s54 in the M3 or my S62 in my e39 M5. For me, the F10 is a great daily driver as far as speed and comfort. If I was searching for a weekend toy, would probably look at bmw coupes/p-cars etc. Best of luck!

Hey, if you like the f10 M5 I would 100% grab one. At the price points available it’s a no brainer.

I have a 2013 m5 since 2014 and it’s been solid ! Like all cars, you must stay on top of the maintenance for longevity. I have other sport vehicles, this car I chose to keep and switch up the others.

40-50k miles on a M5 is nothing to worry about, just make sure the service history shows good upkeep. Go buy it and post some pictures !!

Good luck

Agree with all previous statements, but realize that your maintenance cost will go up. Find how much to replace brake pads and rotors. Even for a DIY kind of guy, parts, quality parts, are not cheap. You'll invest in a good code reader. The usual BMW preventative maintenance rules applies, cooling system, fluid swaps, etc. Mine is a daily as well, not raced or tracked, so my maintenance is lower than someone who does. But that's the same for anything else.

Thank you guys! I’ll keep everyone updated. Looked up some parts like brakes & rotors, they are pricey but nothing I can’t handle. It won’t be my daily driver and I have some great, trustworthy mechanics ready to go if I need any service. I’ll post a photo if I go ahead and pull the trigger. Thank you once again.

f10 m5s are criminally undervalued. I cant believe these cars are almost the same prices as something like a 340i.

Go check out my build thread for an idea of the kind of maintenance a 40k mile m5 needs. I do it all myself but the parts are very expensive. 2k brake job, 2k control arms, etc etc
