Its really cheap for M5 to cost $180k. Here u pay $300k for normal edition. And no lease option, salesperson probably will laugh at u if u ask for the lease rate. And they will answer u' no money dont buy, buy cheaper car' lol. Americans really pampered with all these leasing and financing options. God bless u guys.

I think most people slamming the price of the car are not really focusing in on the relative costs in Japan. If the base M5 is equivalent to $150K USD that means that maybe there are tarrifs/duty taxes driving up the pricing as the car is 50% higher than an M5 in the US. So maybe the standard options on the "Nighthawk" are also 50% higher as well:
Competition package: $7,300 = $10,950
Carbon Ceramic Brakes: $9,250 = $13,875
Merino Full leather: $3,500 = $5,250
Frozen Paint: $3,000? = $4,500
Carbon Fiber Interior: $3,600 = $5,400
Dark Chrome Finishes: $1,000? = $1,500

Even if you just add up the US prices of the options included in the package it comes to roughly $28K...and if you apply the same 50% mark up as on the base M5 itself it comes to almost $42K.

Did you read the third bullet point in the list at the top of that post? It is highlighted in blue so it stands out...

Nevertheless it is true that American buyers will generally not be interested in stripped down BMWs at a huge premium over the standard model, even when they offer performance enhancing features. The price BMW has to charge to make these cars profitable in the US makes them non-starters here.

As for aesthetic-only special cars, we've gotten a number of them over the past few years. They typically cost no more than you'd pay for the equivalent individual treatment, which makes them a reasonable deal if that is your thing. My problem with them is, if I am spending the money for the custom treatment, I want the car exactly the way I like it. And then you have edition 1 of 1 instead of 1 of 100 or even 1 of 10 as with this example.

For a $180K this car should come with a porn star model, that her only Job is to keep telling you how awesome you are.

How much is a base M5 in Japan? and is this high cost due to tax?

Guys....it's only money. If you have to ask how much then you can't afford it. If you have it, then 100k is chump change . There are a lot of "regular" 5 series owners out there who think we are stupid to be paying a premium for our "///M" badge...lol.

Overall it's a nice set up. As everyone else mentioned. Where the hell is the B&O sound for the sticker?

I would build out an individual order for less. But I do love the color combo, just right. And the name fits.

Can't wait for the new extra limited M5 dubbed the Shadow Hawk II for $200,000. A replay of the M3 multi release limited production?

There is no question we do have perks in the US with different finance options. Lease options make a lot of sense to business owners for tax write off purposes. You end up with a brand new car and the effective rate of ownership cost (for myself) is only $138/a month on a $705/month lease. I always purchased and wrote off the depreciation (again, there are perks in the US)

We own all the other cars outright.

it's just a marketing photo...plus Japanese cars can be offered on either sides...

rationalize any way you want it, you've seen it with the E9X M3, there will be many more limited edition M5s coming out in the next 6 years. As you already are, be content with what you have. You're one of the only a few 10,000 or so owners in the next 6 years that will enjoy this beast.

agreed, most people are fixated on prices and are just somehow sizing up their cars with these special editions.

Someone sees a car like this and would naturally think, well my M5 costs $100K USD, therefore, this car is at a $80k premium, so the sum of all the parts must add up to $80k, so let's add this and that...etc etc etc. It's just a pointless excercise, as local taxes and exchange rates distort these amounts. We get our motoring for cheap in the US, and that's all it is.

tax and exchange rate differences...BMW can also charge more for their cars in lower volume markets.

I am very aware of the "special editions" the US has received. However they are less frequent compared to other parts of the world. They are also less significant.

Since you brought up the lame "Lime rock edition" I will put that in perspective. That car has small cosmetic features and most notably the color. Big deal. What about the M3 GTS???? Didn't get it here. That car is a true special and limited edition with significant differences. I digress

I don't think either of those is true. Of course the latter is subjective, but aside from the M3 GTS and M3 CRT, all other special edition M3s around the globe were cosmetic. And as for frequency, we got at least four special edition M3s here: Frozen Gray, Frozen Black, Frozen Red/White/Blue, and Limerock. And the Limerock was a US exclusive.

But that's exactly like the M5 that is the topic of this thread.

Definitely a digression, yes. Cars like the GTS do not sell in the US because for the price, people want more luxury features and more status. At 100k, I don't think you'd be interested in a GTS, and neither would most others. Maybe for 80k, but they can't make money selling it at that price.
