Excellent write up, made me feel much better about the M5 after reading a few mediocre write ups about the M5 (Compared to the RS6 and TT E63).

I want to touch your dashboard.. your sweet soft leathery dashboard!

Poor Porsche dude, at least he wrecked it while using the car's intended purpose, being a performance car. ref: http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/934/img4222je.jpg

Great car, trip, and write-up. I felt like I was with you on the trip as the co-driver. I hope I run into you on my trips to San Diego so I can beg for a ride.

Cheers!

Congrats on the M5. Great post and ED write-up! Thanks for sharing. Reminds me of my ED adventures

Unfortunately, I didn't follow the 24-hour rule and curbed my rims in Munich. lol.

The deactivation of break-in mode is interesting. I wonder if it limits certain parameters to not allow harm to the engine during break in mode. I also wonder if it maybe has nothing to do with changing the cars parameters but instead is there to indicate to BMW / The Dealership whether you adhered to the break in procedures or not (for warranty purposes). I'd like to find out some info on that.

Very nice review and more power to you. How much better can it get doing ED with your SA

One thing. Did you feel like the thrust while accelerating hard was going to tear your head apart? I drove the new GTR and it felt like my head was going to separate doing hard LC. Totally different feeling in E60 that felt likeafterburners up top and nothing down low.

I suspect M5 F10 is more like the GTR feel of acceleration from low rpms and even sustained very high speeds.

Thanks!

You did a great job on the write up. I was hoping the whole while that you included pictures at the end. Did you plan the whole trip by yourself or is this a part of the ED experience? Thanks again.

Philippe
Philippe,

I planned the entire trip by myself. I had no one to coach me or guide me through the details other than the Bimmerfest Euro Delivery Wiki and from what I read through other peoples past experiences. I actually got the idea to go to Portofino because of another members pictures of his visit there while on his Euro Delivery. I am a meticulous planner, and I had booked and reserved everything in advance. My entire trip went exactly as I planned it with the exception of a slight flight delay for our flight back to San Diego from Chicago. All I really did was use Expedia.com and did a lot of research on what hotels I wanted to stay at. Most importantly I planned my route that I would end up near the Nurburgring with over 1,200 miles and a BMW Dealership nearby. It all worked out perfect.

Yes, the F10 M5 is more like the GTR feel of acceleration. The thrust is literally all over rev band, but it especially feels like afterburners above 5,000rpm when you are approaching peak horsepower around 6,000rpm. For comparison and experience I have also driven a modded 2012 GTR and modded 650hp and 620tq Merc CLS 63 AMG.

Wow what an epic experience. Congrats on the car!

I loved seeing your pics, reminded me of when I went through Europe a couple of months ago. The Grossglockner toll road is breathtaking!
