are intakes really worth it - Chime In

I've heard mixed reviews. MANY say OEM intake is great - just remove carbon filter. That will produce plenty of air flow. Some say remove carbon filter, and replace oem filter with K&N or other performance filter.

So I have done just that, I have removed the carbon filter, and left my regular filter in there... I am looking at the possibility of adding a performance intake, but only if there is really PERFORMANCE behind it. I already get a lovely Swooshing sound with catless DP, and my car sounds just fine. I prefer the performance aspect of it.

I am definitly leaning towards BMS intake due to the price. According to my logs, my car is consuming about 1050 KG/H (this was a log done in third gear all the way to redline).

Can someone chime in as to the performance of a third party intake VS Stock? I See RK Autowerks claiming 20-30WHP ( i think) on their website. What about MSR? BMS claims I think 10-20whp. How valid are these statements, and have people dynoed before and after intake install?

thanks!

I can't speak for the power increase. But every time I start to think I messed up getting the RK Intake, I have the windows down while driving near buildings or trees and hear the intake noise and no longer regret.

ha ha. EVERYONE LOVESSS the sound. I get it. Talk numbers!! I cannot justify paying $1500-$2000 dollars because it sounds pretty. I gladly will do that and spend that much for 100+ WHP.

Charcoal delete and K&N's; 10-15 hp if lucky. Nothing you're going to notice IMO.

This is a mod that's less than $100 and I do hear a difference in sound in certain rpm bands.

Just ordered on Amazon. My logs show 1050 kg/h air flow coming into the engine at redline in third gear. Just for the hell of it, will do a couple pulls once these K&Ns are in and see if my airflow increases. Will keep you guys posted.

For horsepower increases, not worth it. For sound, changing to open filter is worth it. For the cost of the cold air intake kits, way overpriced. Blower cars benefit from upgraded air intake kits, not so much on turbo cars.

Msr are cool but not 3k cool and RK are nice but not 1500 nice.

So I got the BMS and they caused CEL and they sounded okay. So I returning them.

Then I found project gamma intakes which are just like MSR and RK and they were less than $1k shipped. Had them installed and they are cool.

Sound good, look good and I guess maybe some power increase?

My thoughts exactly and experience with the BMS the same. Do you have a link to the Project Gamma intake? No CEL with those?

The owner of project gamma is on the forums his name slips me at the moment.

If you have instagram they are active
On there and answer DM project_gamma really honest and cool guy.

These have had no CEL and I've put over 250 miles. They sound great too.

They come with the k&n filter but you can also get the same
Filters as MSR which are 89MM billet filters which apparently make the better noise.

Sound is not noticeable if you have an aggressive exhaust, but when someone else drives your car and you're watching outside it sounds pretty sweet

Why would mass flow increase? You're commanding Xpsi, turbo will always deliver Xpsi(wastegate limited of course) just think about this. Airflow increasing means more boost...

Damn this is draining.

No worries man, it's inevitable that this topic will come up every few months, it happens.

The more you search the more you'll find that intakes are more for looks and sound than gains. Depending on how much you search, you may find someone that had some pretty quick time slips with stock air boxes.

1. We are talking PRE-turbo... there is no 'boost'
2. May want to revisit the Ideal Gas Law (PV=nRT)

Prepare yourselves for a flood of science, guys! For the non-engineers, feel free to focus on the whoosh sound

Cool! Never was exposed to this

I mean airflow reported by the MAF. I thought an aftermarket intake would prove to be better than stock if the MAF reported more KG/H of air being consumed by turbos/engine.

If my stock intake with my tune reports 1050 kg/h and an aftermarket intake reports maybe 1075 kg/h with the same tune, then obviously an aftermarket intake would be worth it...

Am I missing something?
