Thanks for the kick in the ass, I am going to look into this, just gotta find the time with a 6 month old at home it can be trying to say the least. I am really interested in it tho, I think I have the potential to be pretty decent, I punch really hard and am pretty versatile. I like to be challenged and dont mind putting in hard work.

I am not looking to compete at my age, but mainly want to use this as a good past time that will keep me in shape as I have gained a good 10 lbs over the past 2-3 years and need something to get my heart rate going again. I sit in an office for 50+ hrs a week and could use the conditioning. What would you guys say will get me the best conditioning?
Thanks in advance
Conditioning is relative; practice enough BJJ and you will get good BJJ conditioning, practice enough KF and you will get good KF conditioning.

Not sure about your current fitness, but if you're an an exercise nubee then look to your basic fitness first, regardless of what you wanna train in; get in the habit of doing basic regular exercise (home workout, gym, etc). This will build your basic strength and endurance, which apply to any art you want to practice.

After than, visit each of the dojos in the arts that you're interested in. Watch a few classes, talk to the staff and students, try to get a feel for whether it "feels right" for you. This has been discussed endlessly on the internet; a good primer is the MA FAQ (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/martial-arts/faq/part1/) Section 5 "How do I choose a school".

Once you've done all that and chosen a school, any good instructor should be able to provide the best "bang for buck" conditioning exercises which are most relevant to that art.

I agree for the most part. I disagree about delaying to build endurance before starting. Get in and start working. Endurance will come.

i did Muay Thai for 4 months last summer, excellent shit, never knew i could punch that hard, plus it reallyyyy improved my kicks,

think bout doin it this summer too especially since a newer place opened up near me, all depends on the price tho plus it would cut into my regular gym schedule

Ive been doing mt for 2 years in socal. On a break now since i can't afford it lol. Anyways, if you want to join one of those martial arts gyms you should just do it. Most have a beginner class anyway designed for new people. Ive seen plenty of people men/women/kids old/young just jump into it. Yes you will feel and look awkward but everyone starts there. You get better with more training and theres probably plenty of other people there to show you the way.

I took a 3 weeks hiatus from MT due to injuries. I went on Monday night and felt like I was going to pass out. My kicks are horrible now.

I started going almost every day now, despite my torn labrum. Doing well.

Today we did 3 x 3 minutes of pads, then switched, then repeated the entire thing on the other side. That's six 3 minute rounds of punching and kicking and an equal amount of time holding pads. Felt great!

I was sick last week, too, so I only went on Monday.

I've got a BB in Taekwondo. Many might think its a useless art with BJJ and MMA coming up.

But nothing beats getting into a street fight with some smart ass who wants to show his friends how tough he is then proceeding to round house him in the jaw, knocking him flat on his back.
I haven't been in it for about 3 years now but its something you don't forget.

I'm starting BJJ soon.

Just started training Muay Thai again after being away for 3 years. Feels great!! Training under Ajarn Berklerk Pinsinchai for the next month or so while he's in Toronto. He's the Thai counterpart to my Toronto Kru. My cardio will take time to get back to what it was but everything else is looking really good. Can't wait to fight again!

Berklerk's the one in red.
