I really don't understand people who are obsessed with the BMW's of yore (e.g., "the last 'real' BMW was the bla bla bla model from 1972"). I say, embrace progress, and let the past go! The fact is, BMWs are and always were just another product - a commodity, mass produced in a factory, designed by engineers, and marketed by guys in suits who need to make their quarterly numbers so they can pocket a big bonus at the end of the year. And if that means making an AWD M5, then believe me, there is no force in the universe stronger than the corporate drive for profits, it will happen. And that's the story of industrial progress! I love it!

Wonder what will happen if someone at the factor takes 600HP engine from the 30th anniversary car and stuff it into the 550 x-drive?

Will that be faster (0-60) than the Audi S6 (Car and Driver, 3.7s) and RS7 (Road & Track, 3.2s)?

People can't really complain about this. You can make a case/argument about switching from naturally aspirated to turbo because the former still makes sense. If the G80 M5 is expected to make north of 600HP, you're really going to rely on two rear wheels to manage all that power? While everyone has their preference, you still have to consider that the M5 has to be competitive still and the M5 can't be competitive against the E63 and RS6 if it doesn't go AWD.

Well, BMW also said in the past you won't see turbo in M cars, look what happened. Companies are run mostly by marketing people and they will eventually cave in to what the market wants.

I thought they were going to build the cars for those who wanted the power and the AWD.

I am certain that many (not all) who are complaining abt AWD in M cars would be jumping head first into the bandwagon after they have sampled its ability to put all that power down. Like some have mentioned, people's resistance to change is legendary. As much as I am a RWD fan, i won't object to AWD simply based on ideology. Change whatever u want. I care only abt the end product. If it drives better, i could care less how many driven wheels it has. I don't buy a car to belong to a clique. I buy a car for it to entertain me. When a car u own becomes obsolete, it doesn't mean u are too. No need to get all defensive. Chill out. Progress is unstoppable...

The line between an E63 AMG and a BMW M5 just got blurred that much more.

That's fine, because the Z3 will be RWD.

Ok, this solidifies my next order...for likely the last time, I'm (in a relative ways) going old school...F80, manual box. Rear-wheel drive. I swear THEN I will convert (while hopefully keeping the E39M M5, Z4M coupe and F80) to combo hybrid or fully electronic technology, DCT, all-wheel drive, whatever. I will become a consumer of modern cars.

LOL!!!!

We've been saying it for years now and nothing!! Now that
Car and Driver has disapproved along with So many fans and press they finally address weight. Ayayay! Same discussion on other forums about the softening of BMW and all they say is sales are booming! For
Now. BMW needs refocus. If you want a Tank you buy a Mercedes. Bmws should be nimbler otherwise they don't stand out.

AWD? For fuks sake. No reason to get an M over an AMG or RS car anymore. If i want AWD i'll go with the company that has refined it for decades.
