honestly, some people just want to tweak on a car... they buy base because they want to mod it.

for me, I had a 335 first cause I wanted to save mpg vs. what I pay now for the M3.

I completely agree! Why mess with a good thing!?!

and it cheapens the looks of car.

Nobody tries to make an M car into an exotic. People mod M cars to their individual likings. Not everyone wants an exotic. Try driving one everyday and see how you feel.

What do people think of the Rapide? I've always loved the looks and the sound of the glorious V12, but it clearly lacks horsepower and performance. What do those things weigh anyways? Keeping within the same segment I think that a Rapide would be my next car of choice if the M5 did not exist.

I think the latest Rapide S is really nice. However it is twice more than twice price of the M5.

Well, I'm not blowing 20k in mods on my 550, but I am freshening it up for another 6-8 months - Dinan tune; change of front bumper. I'm waiting on the M5 LCI - I just could not fork out 100k + and have it dated in about 6 months. And my 550 only has 18k miles so it just needed a little lovin' and freshening up before the arrival of the M5. So, there is some method to some folk's perceived madness....

There's a guy at my job who did a Dinan transfusion on his E39 540. Supercharged, slammed suspension, exhaust tips, M badges, interior flourishes, aero kit - the works. As I drove past him in the parking lot one day he asked me how I liked my M5, to wit I answered, it's an awesome machine. I then asked him how he liked his 540. He's at least 50 years old...

+100000000 Nicely said. To say it "cheapens" the look of the car is pretty subjective. I don't personally think that my HRE S101s, the IND pieces, a subtle drop to close a gap, custom powdercoated Eisenmamn exhaust, etc. will at all cheapen the look of mine. to each his own. Many might say that a fully stock car looks too "plain" and not unique. It is all a matter or personal preferences.

Well thats what you just said, its subjective. You know that many people cant even see the difference between an M and regular 3 series. At the end of the day its your money.

I disagree with some comments on this forum. I own a 550 because when I looked to change my Audi A8 for a BMW I took many things into consideration.

At the time when I bought my 550 I owned a Porsche 997 and an Audi A8 both paid off... I decided to give my father the Audi for his 60th anniversary and had to go find a car.

Looking around I found a 5 month old 550 with just 2k miles fully loaded for $56k and I mean fully loaded $82k sticker..

Once I got the 550 I realize how cheap it was to get more power, I wasn't trying to make it look like an M5 I was just trying to get more power... After spending about $15k I can now take M5s from the line to about 120mph... Not only do I have great power, suspension and brakes but I also enjoy taking the car to the runner and spending time Doing research, this is part of the fun.

The 550 is my everyday car and I am happy to know that for $66k I have an amazing machine, might not be the M5 but hey, I saved $50k which I can now use for many other things...

Since then I sold my 997 and I am thinking of getting the M5 or maybe the porsche cayenne and letting my wife take my 550

Oh you reinterpreted my comment wrong. I was not saying that personally. I was pointing out that some people think modded cars are ridiculous and some people think non-modded cars are "plain". Making the point that criticizing either style is not cool and that people all have different likes. Doesn't make one point of view better or worse or any more correct than the other. Frankly, doesn't mean a hill of beans and it is probably a better practice to keep those sort of subjective observations to ourselves if they are going to be critical of other board members. In my family we have one "modder" (me) and a wife who will not let me touch her X5. She thinks I am nuts. Perhaps she is right.

I hear ya! I say hell it's your car you can put wings on it if you like. As you know in life too many people have opinions on what others should do, or buy. Have you put your wheels on if so post pic.

Agreed! Nope. Still waiting on the darn things. We will see if they actually arrive on time. My last set of HREs took several weeks longer than expected but well worth the wait. Honestly, I LOVE the stock wheels. Fit the car very nicely. I am keeping them this time and not selling like I did with my E60. I am hoping I actually like how the HREs look better than I like these. If not, I will turn around and sell them.

Fakes!!!!!

I would like to thank the author of this post for bring these questions about Fake M drivers to light, and I feel the same way as RPIM5.

If it's not a real M nobody should try to make their car drive or look like one. I bet their Wives or GF's hop out the car with fake Birkin or Louis bags as well.

It clearly explains a persons(Fake)personality. If you buy things to look like something its not, the person is truly not as genuine as what they are buying.

This is my opinion and like they say, opinions are like assholes everybody has one!

To each his own, as they say. For The guys who don't like seeing m5 look a likes talk to bmw they are the culprit, my 550xi has the m badge, on each wheel, has the same m sport ground kit, has the m badge on the steering wheel and all the door sills. So bmw has done much of the work for me, I also did not want to spend 100k on a car when I can have almost the same great look and some of the performance for 2/3 of the price plus I have x drive and m5 does not.

Now to what I added

M5 diffuser, m5 rear lip, burger beta tune, m5 front sway bars, m5 exhaust, dinan springs , m license plate frames.

Also bought my car with 11,000 miles was a 2012 550i x drive that the Owner was driving. Almost loaded 79,500 sticker for 58,500

It may not be an m5 but it sure looks like one and has xdrive with almost all the same parts the m5 has I love it and it was within my budget, do I have an m5 badge on it? Of coarse not but I do have m sport badges as that's what it is, I could care less what people think it is exactly what I wanted on the budget I have most of what the m5 has to offer for 30k less and it's a daily driver good In the snow!

If the m5 guys don't like that tell bmw to stop making Both cars parts 100% direct bolt ons.

That's why I like the M5. It's subtle enough to drive daily and at the same time you can enjoy the thrill of driving this beastly machine with all the upgraded amenities regular 5 series owners could ever dream of.

For the same price I could buy a used Ferrari 430 and get annoyed at every gas station on people asking how do I buy one of these, how much is it, and then they expect you to give them a financial plan for their life. It gets old.
