The F10 5 series and therefore the F10 M5 is so well insulated the BMW engineers made a decision to introduce Active Sound to provide some auditory sense of engine "performance." I trust the BMW engineers and I am unable to detect it in my car.
Here is a little secret, Porsche also uses Active Sound technology. |

I only used to hear it when in the upper RPM range.. above 5,700.
Once I installed an Akra exhaust onto my car, I coded the ASD off. IMO, it's not a big deal as others make it out to be. The only reason I had to code it off was because I changed the exhaust and did not want two different exhaust notes in the cabin.

I can't even tell it's there, though my kids do tell me I'm hard of hearing. Much ado about nothing in my opinion. Just roll under an overpass or any enclosed space, open the windows and the sunroof and then put the pedal to the metal...that's your active sound.

I'm driving LCI CP and I'm not certain there's anything coming out of my audio system. Driving with the windows open is exactly the sound I hear when the windows are closed (but louder of course). I will say the exhaust on the CP is sweet. Just love the sound when it's shifting between 1st and 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. You get a throaty "blaght" as described in other posts. I'm not used to that sound (having previously driven a 997) but I am now addicted to it. I've received many compliments on the sound of the car from friends when I drive up to their homes. No need to ring the door bell :-)

In my experience the only folks critical of ASD are those who don't own an M5. Typically, owners either don't care or are indifferent to the concept. It had no influence whatsoever on my decision to buy or pass.
