Downpipes install help!!

Has anyone installed their down pipes by themselves?

How hard is it to separate the down pipes from the mid pipe?

What exactly do I need to do at that point? I know how to access the down pipes from the engine bay but that's about it. I want to go into this install with as much info as possible.

There's a DIY. I believe you need access to a lift.

$400 for a job that is slip on is not worth it IMO.

It's easy to access the downpipes just trying to avoid any surprises (i.e. Taking off the whole exhaust)

I have instructions that came with the downpipes, it just stops at the point of removing the downpipes from the midpipe. I have access to a lift. But I want to be 100% sure of what to do before I waste time on the lift (pay per hour)

Make sure to get new gaskets between the turbo and downpipe, and between downpipe and exhaust.

Its maybe a 3 hour job if you take your time.
It was pretty easy, just aligning the new down pipes were a bit of a pain, twisting and turning to make it fit.

From underneath, its just loosening clamps between the downpipe and exhaust, then tightening them back up.

Overall, it was back breaking work if I didnt climb up on the engine bay; then again I'm only 5"8

Downpipes are a DIY job on the N63/S63. No need to fully remove exhaust and you do not even really need a lift. Just a little advice, align both of the turbo flanges and exhaust clamps Before tightening everything. After everything is aligned, tighten the turbo side first. Also I hope you are planning on replacing the turbo side gaskets.

Access underneath to the 4x 13mm bolts/nuts (2 each side) is easier if you remove the alloy sump guard, you can see the bolts but its at an angle. Not sure if you can do it all from above like spider feet (Day Laborer) is possibly doing?

And pray when you turn your car on it doesn't rattle. Pretty sure like 90% of the M5's after going catless rattle like crazy.

From m5board:

Fitment for the downpipe is very specific. Make sure you follow our installation notes (or print this out and give it to your installer).

Installation notes:
- Exhaust of the car does NOT need to be removed. Simply loosen the exhaust nuts on the bottom and bring exhaust downward WITHOUT fully removing it. Removing the exhaust will make it harder to lined up the downpipe from the top.
- Once, the bottom of the downpipe is inserted into the 2 bolt exhaust flange, LINE UP THE DOWNPIPE TO THE TURBO flange. If the downpipe is inserted too DEEP into the 2 bolt flange, the center radius of the downpipe will hit the engine cyl head and you will have fitment issues. It is extremely important that you follow these notes.
- Do NOT tighten brackets until EVERYTHING that holds the downpipe in place is installed.
- Make sure the car is FULLY cooled. If you are doing the installation yourself, we recommend letting the car sit for a few hours with the hood open.

Installation time: 2-3 hours (cold car)

Yep, the rattle is really a huge side-effect of downpipes. We are actually working on having a solution for this in our reflash. So far, we got this issue resolved on N63 platform and soon will have it available for S63 as well.

thanks!

also quick question. lets say someone were to add dp's to the m5, without doing any tuning/coding etc... is there ANY benefit to it at all? obviously you would get the sound. but that's about it, correct?

Anytime you remove restrictions in gas flow (ie cat removal) you'll always see *some* improvement in power.

You'll get a slight power increase and a lot of sound.
A lot more power with a flash tune.
