IMO I would have to go with:

(no specific order)

E28 M5
E30 M3
E36 M3 LTW
E46 M3 CSL
M1
Z8

Question to the crowd:
What other M cars have made BMW CEO's cry upon first sight besides the 1M?

I don't own a 1M, but I could have when it was for sale around me a couple months ago...I just love my 128i too damn much!

1M is insta-classic, M2 won't compare in terms of value.

Ya know... i've been looking at the Z3 M roadsters forever especially the 2001-2002 model where it has the 333hp motor. Mmmm... come to think of it, if I find one right now with a M/T, i would pick it up.

My wife saw a z8 for 30k in a used car lot and ended up getting a 4k Volvo sedan. I was at work.

I told her we gotta get "that" car, but it was sold 15 minutes later.

I know, I made the thread.. but it morphed into all bmw's. But since you wanna stick with Ms only:

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...r-sale-on-ebay

"As you might expect, however, there’s a catch: the price tag. This ultimate collector’s M1 is listed with a Buy It Now price of $499,900, and it has 158 watchers—and two offers already made and declined, presumably somewhat below the BIN price."

I don't see how the M2 could be
more collectible than the 1M. There will be more example, a longer production run and two transmission choice nothing more special than every M3. 1m was the last one of the hydraulic steering car, the last one manual only, it was limited in number, short production run, loved by reviewers, having a spirit of it's own. Appart of some special model: M1, M3 Evo E30, M3 lightweight E36, E46 Csl, Z8, M3 GTS E92 and probably the F82 GTS, this is the safest bet for collectible over all the "regular" modern bmw M models.

Conveniently all of the Z3 M's were manuals. However the M Roady was a flexy sucker. The M Coupe was 2.6x more rigid. The Z4 roadster was nearly as stiff as the Z3MC and the coupe was a little stiffer than that.

So if you want a convertible, the Z4 M Roadster with the S54 might be preferable. Plus the S54 made a few more hp in the Z4 than the Z3, at least on paper.

I think the list is short:
  • M1
  • E30 M3 Evo
  • E46 M3 CSL
  • E90 M3 CRT

I believe we've all forgotten one model that although not officially sold in the US, does exist in small numbers over here: the Z1

Just wait a few more years. Last S54, last BMW that starts with a real key, no iDrive, lighter and stiffer than an E46 M3, and far more rare. Truly the last of a breed.

dunno... only one i found listed was for $37,000 with 90K miles on it. Seems like most bmws are driven and have high mileage... thus you dont see them selling for high prices.
