Forward Collision Warning Question...
I just picked up a 2013 CPO that has the FCW option (non auto braking version) as part of the Drivers Assistance Package.
Does anyone know where I can get more technical information about it (distance for each setting ,etc.)? More specifically, I have it turned on and set to Early, but I have yet to see it go off in what I consider to be an Early situation. I tried it out today with no braking as I approached a stopped car or slowing down car in traffic (I had my foot ready to brake but not on the brake and made sure no one was behind me). The warning came on but if that's what Early is, I'd hate to see what Late looks like because Early was maybe 1.5-2.5 car lengths at best. Even then, it was the warning stage (no audible sound). A week into owning my CPO, I just want to make sure everything works as it's supposed to. The manual doesn't really provide much detail around the conditions that trigger it. For example, does it work above certain speeds only? thanks! |

It really depends on the rate of speed in which you are traveling, and how sudden the car in front of you decelerates.
Often times, if you try to "test" the system by approaching a stopped car; it will not result in how you believe it should behave. For me the front collision warning comes on when someone cuts in front of me, or when traffic suddenly slows down without warning. Other times, it provides a false warning from oncoming vehicles

go to setting in iDrive and you can change ealy or late detection of front collision warning. If you tail someone closely on the highway you will see it pop up.

so does the system apply brakes or not? It appears to when I pull into my garage so I've never hit the foam bumpers I put in on the wall. but I just don't know if it works while on the highway or low speed roads

The newer model years have a system that brakes. Mine doesnt have Active Cruise Control (Radar based). It uses the camera that's part of the lane departure system. The 2013 doesnt have any auto braking.

It would be nice if the older system could be "Flashed" updated to enable an "Audible" Alert along with the Visual alert. I for one would take advantage of this and ask the dealer to update my car's warning notice.
Collision Avoidance should be standard on every new car/truck sold if you ask me. Just as the "Third Brake Light" reduced rear-end collisions,...."CA" would greatly reduce "Front-End Collisions across the board. Just say'n!

This is true. I had a car swerve in front of me and cut me off a few weeks ago. I braked hard and it was close and I heard the high pitched alarm beep for the first time.

How close did you get? I've come within half a car length and only get the "warning" light and I have it set to "early" for warning distance...

I was about a car length and I was on the brakes pretty hard. I had always gotten the Red Car symbol, but this was the first time it BEEEEEEEEEEEEPED . I think it has to do with your rate of deceleration.

Took my car in today to see if there was an update to get Album Art to show up via Bluetooth (I've seen this work in new loaner cars). Sadly, it did not enable that functionality, however on the way home, the forward collision icon lit up when I got too close to car. In addition to that, I also lost and gained a few things I've found in the Nav system.

The field of view for the camera is quite narrow,...as it's amazing that it stays within the confines of one lane.
