Oh well, at least I have replacement windshield insurance.
It's just a car. It's just a car. It's just a car.... Curses.

Yep you need a special one that works with HUD right?

Correct. HUD is a different one. The insurance was like $1400 for tires, wheels and windshield comprehensive. Had the same thing happen w/ my 550 and they replaced 2 tires and the windshield without question. This one has already paid for itself. I'm actually glad it hit where it did (edge vs. center) as a chip can be repaired while this one can't. They've already ordered a new one along w/ the rain sensor. Only other issue is that I had a UV film applied that I'll need to pay to replace.
On the bright side, I don't need to stress about rock chips, at least not for the next week.

do you guys think that the M5 attracts more rock chips than other cars because of aero dynamics. I had more than normal average of chips on my M5 as compared to other cars that i have owned, and it is not the speed i drive , as i have owned multiple sport cars that I drive similar to M5.

Now compare these episodes to never having had a rock chip since 2004 !!! I think new cars are just magnets to these annoyances.

As usual, I stay a few car lengths back in order to avoid this kind of thing. Like damaged goods now. I'll get 'er switched and post a follow up so we can all breathe a little sigh of relief.

I just had my windshield replaced because of a good size rock chip directly in my cone of vision. Cost $1400 and I paid $500 after the deductible. New windshield in about a month then I get 2 small chips on the passenger side from an acorn I think that feel from a tree!

Simple rock chip in the absolute worst area. The edges where the windshield meet the frame are much less flexible than the center of the windshield and hits here tend to cause more damage (including cracks). Just unlucky, I guess - nothing inherently wrong with the car or windshield....

I feel sorry for you man It'll cost around $1600 to replace that in Canada, mainly because the HUD and the sensors on that windshield are special.
Hope your car is ok now.

All better. That insurance I purchased up front has already paid for itself. Now I get to drive around worrying about the next rock chip....

Great news (apart from the worrying bit). The stone that hit my car fortunately missed the windscreen. It chipped the front wing then decided to ricochet around the mirror housing. Preferable to cracking the windscreen, but I was surprised that one chip on the gloss black trim went down to the metal (I was traveling at less than 60mph) ...
