Until all these "experts" have taken the M5 on a track and use it as a DD they will never understand what this car is really capable of. On a track it's not that "heavy and numb" and daily driving it truly is a two faced monster- a luxury cruiser with insane speed if need be.
Done with rant- here is a pic of the wife driving at Watkins in September

Well said!!! I agree 100%.

The weight issue is overrated especially if you understand that this is a street car that can also be tracked. It is same with the E92 M3, people complain about weight over and over, but not sure how many actually own one and how many actually drive them hard. The F10 M5 it is speed machine that handles remarkably .

Actually when it comes to weight, if you look at the lbs per hp, the M5 fairs pretty well at around 7.6 lbs per hp depending on actual weight.

Just enjoy the driving experience and forget about numbers!

Love my car except for the long front. Weight wise I've never given it one thought. Great car.

Very cool wife

One lap of the 'ring in the Ring Taxi showed just what the m5 is capable of. It's un-fugging-believable and not just in a straight line. It devoured the track.

The M5 is too heavy for the track. Anyone who has tracked it properly will realise this. I am not saying the M5 is a bad car - it is a great car - it is just flawed as a track car.

As a road car it is flawed too. Too much power to make the most of on the road and too heavy for the track.

Lucky I enjoy it so much .....

I respectfully disagree on your assessment. The M5 is a flawed dedicated track car. I have been an instructor for the BMW clubs and others for over 15 years, and this car can more than hold its own against many cars who's function is geared more toward track use. We all know what this car's main allure is. A fantastic private jet for the road, capable of devouring huge amounts of roads effortlessly. I need a car that I can transport 4-5 adults in total comfort with superior handling and speed, and that can occasionally have some fun at the track also. I take this car to the track 6-8 times a year. I am not racing anyone at the track, I am enjoying the limits of this car, and having an absolute ball doing it! If I devour quite a few "focused sports" cars in the process, so be it. We know going in that this is a heavy car just by looking at it. If you want a more track focused car, the M3 is a wonderful choice. Just try to put four adults in it for any length of time. This car does exactly what the designers created it for.

Fantastic post, spot on!

I'm stealing your quote to explain the car to my friends and the uninitiated... no better way to describe the car.

Great!

Dr - I appreciate your view. It is absolutely fair enough. You clearly have more experience on the track than I. I have only tracked my car about 6 times. My feeling is that it is too heavy. I used to track my M3 as well. The problem was that I need to accommodate 5 so the M5 was the size I need. I just don't think it quite cuts it as a regular track car. Just my humble opinion.

Your point is well taken. It absolutely does not cut it as a regular track car. That's not what is was designed for. No four door sedan large enough to hold five adults comfortably is.
