Gas Guzzler Tax

Dropped off my X3 for oil change today at the BMW Mountain View and spot this 2012 M6 convertible sitting in the showroom.

I was reading the window sticker and found out the $1300 Gas Guzzler Tax.

The BMW website still is not showing the Gas Guzzler Tax on the M5, well, even not showing for the M6.

It looks like we really have to pay for it now per the order guide suggested.

Yes. Supposedly it's the same $1,300 for a DCT M5 and $1,000 for a manual M5.

I would expect the opposite.

BMW told the press they are expecting 22mpg epa combined fuel economy out of the DCT M5.

Here is the tax schedule:

Combined fuel economy of: Amount
at least 22.5 mpg No tax
at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 mpg $1000
at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 mpg $1300
at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 mpg $1700
at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 mpg $2100
at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 mpg $2600
at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 mpg $3000
at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 mpg $3700
at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 mpg $4500
at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 mpg $5400
at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 mpg $6400
less than 12.5 mpg $7700

Interesting. Although the new F13 Covertable M6 does have a Gas Guzzler tax on it now, there is still no determination about the F10 M5 yet.

I have been hounding my dealer for weeks now and nobody knows yet. We probably won't find out until next month.

I really hope there is no tax. I hate that stupid tax anyways.

It seemed counter-intuitive to me too, but the M6 got hit $1,300 on the DCT and $1,000 on the MT. Hard to see it being much different for the M5 given it's the same drive train.

M5 is 200lbs lighter which is worth 1-2mpg.

I've been told for quite a few months now that I'd have to pay the $1300 gas guzzler tax. My understanding is that a tiered tax structure exists for the gas guzzler tax and, while the F10 gets better gas mileage than its predecesors did, this is the price to play.

Yeah, this may help

It looks like we will just this much improvement from the M6's # to get rid of the guzzler tax.

Amazingly the Shelby 500 made the cut (no GG tax).

BMW should blush if they can't make it happen.

Shelby is a lighter car. F10 is bigger and heavier than Mustang.

No disagreement there: Shelby is lighter.

But in fairness, displacement and output is also up in the Shelby.

My dealership has recently checked with BMW and they are expecting a $1300.00 tax for DCT cars . I believe BMW has been pretty consistent with this view.

I was at the dealer today and asked about the gas guzzler. They showed me an invoice for a car currently at the port in New Jersey and it had a $1300 tax on it. They expected that to stand.

Strange that the Mercedes E63 AMG manages to avoid the gas guzzler tax with its 5.5L twin-turbo V8, and about the same weight and performance as the M5.

Interesting, because others have reported that their dealers said the unofficial info from BMWNA is no GGT.

In order to have the GG designated, wouldn't the EPA have had to test the car already?

I'm no expert but it seems the EPA testing should be ongoing or completed by now. When I ordered my car there wasn't a gas guzzler listed but the invoice I was shown today definitely had it. My car has been delayed since I added piano black trim so I'm not sure if my preliminary build sheet is different than a car actually built. What I saw today looked like a legitimate invoice. I'm hoping like everyone else that it will be lower than $1300.

The 2013 550i and 550xi were just certified by the EPA. M5 should be soon.

I paid the $1300 GGT; it's listed as a line item on my PO and I'm told by the folks in Germany that all M5s will get hit with this. Sucks because the original thinking was like 23mpg...
