Yeah but what about people like me who don't have high insurance costs to begin with? It sounds like ObamaCare where the healthy people subsize the sickly. I'd want to be able to opt out of that part unless they can adjust insurance based on your driving record. And don't tell me I'm paying for the convenience because I can update my insurance info in less than 10 minutes.

Sounds like it could be similar to the Apple Upgrade or AT&T Next Programs. You basically pay an ongoing "subscription" price and become eligible to upgrade when you've paid a predefined percentage of the cost.

I wonder what the long-term durability of this program and how that will effect resale of the vehicles.

Hate to break this to you, but all insurance, whether it's Obamacare, regular health insurance, car insurance or home insurance works this way. We all pay into the pot and the good apples keep the bad ones afloat.

Hot damn! Going to be a lot of new cars on the road. Does that mean these will come back as CPO cars?

Durability is an odd question: durability of the car or of the program? What they’re launching is, in effect, what OEMs have done for their corporate employees and families. Volvo, for one, has had a similar program for their employees for years; this expands on that premise but without any employee discount.

As for resale of vehicles: the retailer gets the car back, just sooner. They can market a 1 m or 2 year old car for less than MSRP and have a customer who doesn’t want to deal with the initial depreciation hit get a car that is still rather new. For the dealers: it keeps the cars in their network and allows them to resell a car more than once. The one concern will be he effect this will have on residuals for convential leases. Will they deteriorate from their current levels? That remains to be seen.

This was exactly my thought.

I like the idea, but in practice I feel I would rather have something to show for with my money. I want my car so I can do with my car as I want. This sounds like a lease that will give me mileage stipulations and no room to modify as I tend to do. As someone mentioned earlier, it would be cool to swap through the lineup pending the seasons, however.

I'm also curious how this will affect current lease residual values during the transition period.

Yes all insurance works this way, but if you’re telling me that under the BMW plan, I will pay the same monthly payment as the maniac next door, I’d prefer not to participate.

I think you are all missing the point in that while the risk is spread, we all pay different rates based on our risk profiles. We don’t all pay the same amount.

Yes I'm interested if it's less than the Porsche Atlanta pilot of $2k for certain models and $3k for the upper end models. I like to switch cars, I live in an urban city, I have two cars for different reasons that I have to rent an extra garage for, I don't like the hassle of going to the dealership to buy and service cars and then pay sales tax, registration and depreciation costs.
