Oil consumption

I know these motors use oil. I've now added 4quarts in 8000miles (including the factory oil change.
About 1 per 15-1800 miles. Seems high... At this rate ill never actually need an oil change.

What are you guys a seeing? Does it get better with mileage?

I'm in the same boat. Kind of annoying because I live far from the dealership.

No these motors don't have to use oil. Im at 5k and haven't used a drop despite very hard use . Its all in how a high performance motor is broken in . Search the 1.5 million oil use maintenance threads lol .

Did my break-in service at 1160 miles and it had used a little oil up to that point. I am at 4200 miles now and recently added half a quart which brought me up to just below full. It didn't prompt me that it needed oil until I did the check oil procedure and then it said I needed a quart. I feel so blind with this damn electronic dipstick that I only added half a quart and that seems to have done it. I can live with half a quart every 3000 miles. I just miss a real dipstick - not just for checking the level but to actually see what the oil looks like.

This hasn't been a thread topic in a very long time... Not terrible to get updates and notify new owners.

So, what's your hi-PO break in method??

I switched to 0W-30 German Castrol. I keep a quart in my trunk all the time. I usually add oil every 4,000mi (in my 3 previous E60 M5's I only added a quart every 10,000mi).

Oil consumption in the F10 M5 seems to vary for most people. I broke my car in by spec.

Many people on the forums bring their M5 to the dealer for oil top offs, and I do not get that - especially for people that live far away from a dealership.

I run an average usage rate of one quart per 16,000 miles. No typo.

That's awesome, then you've never had to add any oil if you follow the service intervals!

I swear by the Alpine break in. Basically this involves driving around Tirol and Switzerland without taking any highways and doing as many mountain climbs as possible.

Not sure how you would replicate this in the US, but avoiding highways is a good start. I literally set my Nav to avoid highways. The rhythm of constantly accelerating and braking as you go from apex to apex on country roads is very good for break in.

8000 miles, not a drop used.
I've followed the BMW break-in instructions.

"AMEN", I say! Others seeing me post on this topic are familiar with my many tirades. This is a positively fabulous car, but BMW has made a concerted effort to "dumb down" owner access/keep certain aspects of the car secret. Having to "code" the car to show actual tire pressure versus just showing "OK", not showing oil, or many other capacities in the owners manual, and stipulating that service should ONLY be done at the BMW dealer, are just a few of the things that drive me mad. As someone who has built a number of race engines in my day, and who has changed all of my own/my family's oil for 35+ years, I think I can handle access to the info... That said, the demographic of the typical BMW buyer justifies their approach. As evidence, I was at the dealer a month ago, and a guy standing next to me brought his car to the dealer and was willing to wait 30 minutes to have his oil and tires checked... In my world, I pull your "man card" for that s..t.

Completely agree with the last sentence. I remember changing a wheel on my dad's car when I was 9 not because I had to but because I wanted to. It was an awesome feeling. I've seen guys my age who couldn't check tire pressure. Crazy.

I do all my oil changes, brake pads/fluids, tire/wheel work, and every other minor maintenance. Regardless of what I drive or if I lease my cars, this will never change.

FYI. Just because you add oil frequently does not mean you won't need an oil change. The crap just concentrates.

The key is in the first 20 miles , to seat the rings to get an ideal seal for combustion . If this is not done you will have the oil consumption people complain about because oil will leak around the pistons and be burned in the combustion process . With the car at normal operating temp ( this is key , never drive any high performance engine hard cold) drive the car at full throttle up to peak torque 5500 rpm then ket the car engine brake back down and repeat . The engine braking is key , do not use you're brakes to slow down . This is why driving in the mountains is very successful too. Do this procedure in multiple gears , do not travel at constant speeds , i.e . Avoid the highway . The next 200 miles is important too , but when the car is brand new is the key time . Who knows perhaps someone at the dealerships blast down a back road did some of you easy break in people a favor when your car was being processed and seated the rings for you .
