+1. I have driven manual, currently drive auto by circumstances, but can't wait to get back to manual - despite the drop in MPG.

Would an 8 speed manual produce better mpg?

Correct.... not much fun factor in a seven speed manual gearbox...or 8... do I hear 9.. maybe 11 speed? Lexus has to have one coming..

It probably would... but then you would have to go to a double tree setup like the big rigs..

To the guys driving manuals...do you do much stop and go/city driving? If so, doesn't the constant shifting get annoying? I have an hour long commute and half of it is stop and go. Maybe it would help keep me awake to have a manual but it seems like it would be a real hassle at times.

Ugh... but completely true if you drive from A town To D town commute even once weekly..
this is supposed to be Texas.... and there's a damn 4 lane highway connecting two major cities... It's supposed to be BIG.

But I agree that the advantage of manual transmission in terms of efficiency is gone.
I'm normally beating EPA MPGs on AT and MT by a mile
EPA always seem underrated to me
On my 335i with MT and N54 i was easily getting 32-34 highway (EPA 26)
On X6M it's 20-23 (EPA 17)

Unfortunately the writing is on the wall...the end is near for manual trans .

I hope BMW will still make them for the manual enthusiast.

There doesn't appear to be as big difference between 328i and 335i as I thought there would be. I assume a 328i would be around 29mpg in mixed driving, while a 335i would be around 26mpg. That is impressive for such powerful engines.
I average 25.5 mpg with my 2009 335i with 6-speed Auto. It was rated (using the newer standard) at 19 and 26 mpg. Driving is 65% California densely packed freeway and 35% around town. When not NEEDING acceleration, I often use the paddles to upshift and rely on its mighty low-rpm torque. Result: great mileage and plenty of power reserve when needed. I am expecting to achieve low thirties with the 2012 335i.

My last commute was 30 miles each way through Boston's worst - from north of Boston to south of Dedham. It was stop and go about 60-80% of the way and I still wouldn't trade the shifting for an automatic (especially in the snow.) Seemed like I had an advantage at jumping in and out of tight spots in heavy traffic, and getting ahead of the next guy. I don't mind the clutchwork at all!

That's probably the only negative in driving with a manual transmission. You become annoyed at constantly having to be near the clutch. The only positive in that scenario is you learn/get the feel for the clutch quick.

Diesels have more potential for torque-bag load- and better mpg.
I know of a tuner-Malone-that specializes in diesel engines. Claims better torque, horsepower and fuel economy on his software upgrade; which is amazing.

the 335d the US has is very outdated, we need the 300+HP 35D engines that Europe is getting right now. Better MPG than our 35D and much faster.

problem is because the US doesn't use much diesel fuel, our prices are pretty high, sometimes they are lower than petrol (summer I think) but in the winter petrol is usually cheaper like right now. I am pretty sure in Europe Diesel is cheaper than petrol fuel all year... Many of us on bimmerpost would buy these awesome Diesels but the general US population is still in the dark ages with their knowledge on the engines.
Even the new diesels clatter. I heard a X5d at the dealer the other day. And while not like a 80s diesel, it was not gas smooth or quiet either.

Awesome gains in fuel economy for the new generation

Any word on if this will happen? The Diesel rumors haven't seemed to pan out lately and BMW seems to be mum on U.S. diesels at the moment. 40+mpg highway is completely doable in the current d given good traffic flow and driving the speed limit (which is the hard part lol).

Matches the listed highway performance but we will have to see what the real world numbers come out to. I have personally seen 40.85mpg on a 600mile (un-refueled) trip from Alabama to Texas in the past (even more on shorter trips). February's Road and Track lists the 328i at 5.7s 0-60 for the manual and 5.9s for the Auto. In comparison Road and Track has pulled out a 5.3s 0-60 run back in 2009 in the d. http://www.roadandtrack.com/tests/comparison/2009-audi-a4-3.2-quattro-vs.-2009-bmw-335d. Where the d shines and I don't think the new 328i can match it, is passing acceleration. The d is simply a beast in this regard.

also, I’m sure these MPG are for the...conservative, non-modding, tea and crumpet crowd!

I'm pretty sure that if one drives aggressively, s/he'll burn just about the same gas mileage whether it's manual or auto.

All these gas mileage numbers seem pretty good, but it's resulted from grandma driving style for sure.

I cant wait to hear the true story of gas mileage from these new turbo's cars.

Cuz My Euro 325i 2.5L engine drinks 12.5mpg consistently, 100% city driving & in semi-manual mode.

It makes sense that the 8gear auto has better fuel milleage than the manual.

I drive a 120d as a second drive, and after doing a business trip ~500km with half the trip doing 190km/h on the highway the clock showed 6.1 L / 100km

New diesels are coming but NOT for sedans. The sedans will get Active Hybrid versions for the US.

According to sources there will be new 4 cylinder and a new 6 coming as well. The X3 will be announced with a diesel as will the X1 (4 cylinder with Countryman reportedly )

As for EPA- whatever mode the car starts in (default=comfort) is what is used for testing. ECO Pro will yield even better numbers- I have seen upwards of 2 mpg when I use it to it's optimum.

More to come soon- Porsche is also going tri-turbo like BMW so FI is going to get even more interesting.
