ticking sound from front (dash / engine)

With the stereo off, and driving 'sanely' with the family we here a rapid constant ticking sound coming from the front of the car. My wife says it sounds like crickets. It's only there under low-mild acceleration (when everything else is quiet enough to hear it), I'm sure it's there as well under greater acceleration but then everything else is making more noise. Anyhow the sound instantly disappears when you take the foot of the accelerator. So I'm thinking it's injector sounds or something like that. The frequency of the ticking doesn't seem to increase with rev's or speed. It's just an annoying sound, albeit a quiet one. Do any of the rest of you hear this sound? If it's a common M5 sound I'll forget about it, otherwise aarrgghh.

Does it sound a bit like static? I had this on my earlier F13 M6 and it was related to the symposer and as such was coming out of the speakers. That was more like static though, although could be called a ticking sound at a push!

Is the symposer the unit that makes the 'exhaust' sound? If so I've disabled that via coding, but that may still be the cause. Static to me is a random sound, this is more like a buzz, perhaps around 20-30Hz but with a higher frequency. Always present except for when the accelerator isn't touched. And it sure sounds like it comes from the front of the car.

Yes, thats it....but sounds like it may not be that. By the way, what does it sound like now you've disabled it?

i think i am getting something similar
when u start your car tomorrow morning (cold start), come out of a car and stay next to the front left wheel, i think it is coming from there

it disappears when engine is warm enough, at least on mine, after 15-20 minutes of driving

i dropped my car to bmw yesterday, i should have an update tomorrow, as i want them to look at few bits and pieces around a car

if they did not forget about it, i will let you know what they have said

for me it sounds like some pulley not sitting properly or it wears out

I have the same issue. I'm curious to hear what they tell you.

as long as i am not alone having this i am not worried

but they are so sneaky in BMW... i keep complaining about suspension clunk
and this time they told me: we looked at it and it is your exhaust touching a suspension, but luckily my new SA is very chilled and he said they will change it, after main M technician took a look at it

will keep you posted in regards of that noise

I'll check it out tomorrow, but my sound never disappears, it's there cold or hot. Perhaps I just have very sensitive hearing still.

In regards to the 'fake' sound turned off, the car is a lot quieter now although there is still the drone from the transmission. You really need to open the windows now to hear the exhaust sound. I do wish that it could be enabled/disabled easily or only have it come on when in Sport+ mode or something like that. There are times when the ego wants to be larger than it is - if you know what I mean

Good to know.

I'm going to try to record the sound and play it back at the dealership when I'm in on Tuesday for my 2000km break-in inspection. The sound is loudest at 1500 rpm, and you have to be driving. I can't hear it will parked.

Garage List
2016 BMW M240i  [0.00]
May be totally unrelated but the x3 had something similar, sounded like rustling paper at the base of the windscreen, and was really annoying.

Turned out to be the cover under the hood below the windscreen, the rubber seals were squeaking against the plastic. Some people padded it with foam to stop it until BMW accepted there was a problem then there was a fix with some other rubber stuff (sorry don't recall what they used

Maybe totally unrelated but figured id share

brainblade...did you ever figure out what is causing this noise? I have the same noise:

-engage gas pedal....ticking noise @ constant frequency, does not vary with speed
-disengage gas pedal...ticking noise stops after a brief (half second) delay

this occurs 100% of the time.

mine does vary with rpm, the higher rpm the louder it is i think
whats the mileage on your car?
stock downpipes? or catless?
has your gas consumption increased since it has started?

it seems like on high mileage s63tu leaks occur between turbos/manifolds and turbos/downpipes

i am going to change all clamps next week, hopefully it will sort out the issue

this ended up (for me) being a turbo issue...noise due to excessive play in the turbine shafts. BMW is replacing both turbos.

whats the mileage on your car?
also are you running catless or stock downpipes?
and can you hear it if you rev your car in neutral?

just over 62k miles (100,000km)
stock downpipes...
I don't remember hearing it in neutral...likely because not enough boost is being created to spin up the turbines and cause the noise.

Last question: could you smell any excessive amount of fumes once you open the door after driving the car? Or through open window at the traffic light? Or even through air con?
Thanks
