BMW is quoting M4 at 3.9 (vs 4.2 for M5), is there a chance it's faster?

Doesn't seem to me like it could be faster... I know the 4.2 for an M5 is understated, but if BMW maintains a similar policy then maybe the 3.9 is understated as well...

The M3/M4 is not even out and I'm already tired of people comparing 2 different types of cars. Enjoy your car and forget the others.

It's possible but we all know that manufacturer numbers are made up. We won't really know till we set the drag times.

Don't worry, the first one in my town, I will race it. Then report back. I will do the same with the new 2014 911 GT3.

My prediction, and I have said this before, is that even if the M3/M4 is faster 0-60 than the M5/M6, then from 60-100 the M5/M6 will win no doubt. Full traction just needs to be achieved and the M5 is gone. By the way a 2014 F10 M5 with the BMS tune ran an 11.4 quarter mile time. That is FAST. I doubt even with a tune we'll see M3/M4 times get that fast. It would be interesting to be proved wrong though. Lol!

If the M4 can beat a 2014 911 GT3 then I will be worried (but not really, lol!)

Here's what happened with the last generation of cars. Pretty cool.

Here's some interesting results too. They said the new GT3 is faster than even the GT3 RS 4.0 around the track, but no mention about in the straight line.

I think that's an M6. M5 should be dead even then?

Actually, BMW claims the M3/M4 with DCT does the exact same 21,9s time from 0-1000m... Which means that the M3/4 pulls a little bit of lead from the start and that the M5 claws that back later on. But they are actually, per official numbers, neck and neck after 1000m and pushing 150MPH!!!

And at 1000m the M5 is doing 150MPH...

But real world will tell the true story

Which matters a lot from a standing start, but as speed increases aero drag plays a significant role (weight is allways a factor as long as you are accelerating a mass, it's only at the point of steady speed that weight doesn't matter and it's only about aero drag (disregarding frictional losses, rolling resistance etc obviously)). But as the rate of acceleration decreases it's more an more about the aero drag and the car with more power, or less drag, has an advantage...

Porsche claims 0-60 in 3.3 for 991 GT3 and they sand bag (as does BMW). I have no doubt it will beat a stock M5.

I see it as great news that the M4 is running 3.9. It just means the next M5 will be faster than that.

The M5 is at it's best from 80MPH UP from there it's mental, but here in the UK USELESS, so 0-100 would be a good performance measure, I would think it would be very close indeed.
Above 80 MPH the M5 would win.

Of course it is faster. 430 hp and 406 lb/ft torque on a car that weighs as much as E46 vs the other one thats almost a full 1000 lbs heavier, has 120 hp more to compensate that. You should check power to weight ratios and the torque figures, doesnt require a scientist to figure out M3 will be faster.

I respect M5 a great deal, its a lot of car and a great car but its a heavy car. M3 went lighter whereas M5 went heavier and a lot heavier.

The fact that a manual M3 will be fast than an M5 with dct tells you a lot. Now past 130 mph, M5 may pull ahead but i m sure many people here care more about daily driving which is why 0-60 number is the closest figure.

I love M5 a great deal but I wouldnt buy one because of the 0-60 number. I'd buy one for its comfort and luxury.

Agreed. The 3.3 is probably sand bagged for the new GT3. In a rolling race though, I think it will be interesting between the F10 M5 and a 991 GT3. Time will tell.

I don't even know why these performance figures even matter to you since you won't be driving past 70 anyways. Mr real stig...

They dont matter to me. I was enlightening others - people who seem to care about it

In either case, both are amazing cars. Who cares if one is a few tenths quicker. M5 has always been quicker and this time around its the other way.

That would be me lol given our area and given the hissy fit I threw to get #1

Terry already also has an m4 on order so serious R&D will go into those lower M models as compared to our cars. Still think the m5 will be faster though.

Boosted M's e92 m3 making 500 something/350 to the wheels ran a 12.07... I'm guessing this car all around will be 11.7-12.3. But then the running community should be bigger given the market trends of those smaller cheaper cars which is why it shouldn't be unreasonable to think 10s at some point (unless those ecus really are unbreakable lol)
