My new MCB M5 - it WAS all going so well....

Greetings from Scotland - so my M5 MCB Silverstone interior arrived after 3 long months of waiting on Saturday.

First impressions have been outstanding - the presence, power, refinement and technology in this beast is truly remarkable given how easy it is to drive.

From all the talk on the forums (and having also owned a C63) i was concerned that the beast would be a bit too on the soft/quiet side - it can be but it is also one angry, ferocious animal when provoked!

Some observations so far:

Back wheels even on my 19's are HUGE
Perfect muscular/different look without drawing the wrong type of attention
Happy with standard 19s look - has a 'puffed out' look with the tyres I like
Startup noise is fantastic
DCT is too lazy in comfort setting
engine is too mental for on the road in sport plus setting (almost lost it coming out of a roundabout in the wet in M2 mode)
HUD is amazing always drive it in M mode with digital rev counter
Tech is outstanding (270 camera view is excellent - allow wheel saver!)
LED lights are stunning - look amazing, incredibly bright and give the car a uniqueness on the road
Everyone gets out your way when your behind traffic in the outside lane!

Perhaps its the site of a big blue set of growling angry eyes that gets them moving out the way on that last one!

Issues:

Idrive has reset itself 3 times now - no pattern, anytime and doing different things ( even in the middle of a phone conversation over bluetooth!)

And disaster struck this afternoon - dashboard lit up with an error saying I have lost pressure in my front right tyre, pulled over as quick as I could to witness it hissing away and with a large tear on the tyre wall! Will post a pic but to me it looks like a manufacturing defect (only 500 miles!) and BMW screwed up recovery and left me by the side of the road for 2.5 hours! After 1.5 hrs and three phone calls they finally admitted someone screwed up and hadnt sent someone out to get me! Very angry having spent £££ on a new car 5 days previously! So now i have a 320d instead, fingers crossed a tyre will arrive tomorrow though as it has already delayed the departure of a roadtrip around Ireland planned for this weekend - Glasgow-Stranrar-Larne-Portrush-Galway-Dublin then back to Belfast....

Any suggestions on best way to complain about this issue with BMW and has anyone else had issues with tyres failing or iDrives rebooting?

Wow - sorry to hear about your all-too-early issue with your brand new M5. That's one hell of a tire defect if it wasn't caused by some horrible pot-hole or something. It's on Michelin, not BMW - but I'm confident they'll take care of you.

I haven't heard of this iDrive reboot issue. Sounds like a loose wire to me - you should tell your BMW tech about this and have them check it out.

Gorgeous car nonetheless - you'll be back on the road in no time.

Congrats!

Tire warranty comes in handy in situation like this. I am glad I bought mine because I had a similar damage 10 days after taking the ownership. They replaced the tire free of charge. (Assuming the tire warranty is available at where you are, it is almost a must for our cars)

However, congratulations on the newly purchased M5, I hope they solve your problem properly and quickly so you can get back and enjoy the ride again.

Did you possibly curb the tire? That looks like the tire was severely scraping against something.

Probably got that way driving on it while flat.

Looks like an odd place for a tire defect though....

The iDrive issue is probably a faulty CIC or something related to the CIC. Have the car read out while it's at the dealer.. maybe it has a few codes logged about the issue.

I would just drop the desire to complain about roadside. There is nothing to gain there. Roadside assistance is always hit or miss. It's not BMW taking care of you.. they just operate a service that dispatches other towing companies.

That doesn't look like a tire defect to me. Looks more like damage to the sidewalk by road debris or curbing the tire.

Sorry to see this on a new car would pee me off too.
Not sure about the tyre as when tyres deflate they look like they have been dragged/curbed as the side walls get chewed up.
The Sat-Nav issue I have not heard of before, it must have thrown codes, bmw will get to the bottom of it.

This M5 is the first BMW in a while I have had no initial problems with (touch wood), hope your back on the road soon, John

Thanks fort the comments I took the tyre insurance luckily so sorted out now and am off to pick her the car up now and off to Ireland for a road rip.

The damage on the side wall was done when decelerating once the alarm went off (was going v fast when it happened!) and I was nowhere near a kerb in fact I was overtaking a tractor at the time! while i'm there i'll ask about getting the car checked for any code errors etc thanks all

looks like a tyre failure, it does happen. really sorry to hear it.

really the dealer should sort this.

definitely need to take it in for the reboot issue. that's not normal at all.

Neil.

Reset

Now that you mention it, I have 1200 miles on my 2014 M5 and I have had one random reset of idrive system. Just booted back up so didn't think much of it, I assumed maybe it was getting an update or such like my phone does. Will be interested to see if occurs again.

What a trip we had - car performed amazingly except one of the team of four kept complaining about a sore neck from the accelerating/bra,ing - oh and I got stopped doing silly speeds by some very nice police officers - but looks like i'll going from a clean license to 6 points shortly.

LOL that's the danger of ///M

for what it's worth 400 miles and no Idrive reboot.

Hi,

Also from Scotland.

I think / hope you had an isolated incident. Thank goodness that the tyres pressures are monitored. Probably saved your bacon.

Bought winter tyres? Much easier on the 19".

Anyway, I hit 1200 miles on the a9 today.
- no Idrive reboots in 5 weeks.

Enjoying the adaptive full beams... Wondering if the Xenons could be brighter. So led is probably the thing to do.
