For DCT Drivers

I find that when engaging in spirited driving using S3, I have to compete with the intuitive downshifting of the DCT. It cuts in just fine and downshifts, it just does it a hair too soon and I wind up shifting a gear too low. Anyone have similar experience? If so, what have you done to counter the ultra-intuitive DCT?

What Ive noticed is that it will downshift for me at the same time I try to downshift, and overrides me. It negates my shift it seems.

There is a minimum speed for each gear. I think for gear 3 it's around 15mph and for gear 2 it's around 5mph.

First solution is to always let the car make the 3-2 change for you.

Second solution is to learn and adapt.. make the change before the car.

Or you can just learned to drive in D3 mode a lot and love it like I do.

I use D3 more than S3 too, but when I use S3 I have not encountered this issue. I always beat the DCT to the downshift I guess. I suppose the only time I notice I encounter this is at traffic lights but there I'm really just being lazy and letting the car do the work.

Sorry but can't help here.

Never experienced this...maybe it is because I like to keep the revs high - coming from the E60 M5.

That's happened to me too, just inconsistently.
Thanks.

Thanks. Indeed, I can learn to adapt. It seems I have less control over the DCT than the relatively dim-witted SMG on the E60 - good problem to have provided you make the proper adjustments.

Thanks, Dave. I could hardly hear you over the din of your straight-piped exhaust.
D3 is cool for straight-line speed but I prefer S3 for spirited drives with multiple downshifts. I'm open though; I'll give it another try.

Thanks. I do too. Certain switchbacks I encounter require constant gear changes. And yes, the SMG allowed for more freedom to muscle the transmission at will.

I drive S3 100% of the time and have never experienced this. You may want to downshift earlier and keep the revs up in the prime torque range.

What setting is your throttle in? No clue if that has any effect, but I drive in sport plus throttle always.

Yup, I think your first point is well taken. I keep the throttle in Sport + when in S3. I'll be practicing my new technique this weekend.

Thanks for all the helpful responses.

I run in S2 most of the time and I've noticed the car scheduling a shift just ahead of my input. I suspect they ignore additional input from the driver for a short period after the car makes a shift to avoid dropping two gears when you really just wanted one.
