My Initial M5 Delivery Impressions.

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Got my black, full leather exec package car yesterday.

Hated it yesterday, thought it slow, heavy and remote.

Drove it today the 40 kms back and forth to the quarry, then 140 kms round trip to visit a failing aunt.

I've done about 10 full throttle pulls and think it's adequately fast, not crazy quick. Even with traction control off, I can't get it to break loose. I'll likely add exhaust and a tune and that should make a bit of difference.

It's very quiet, but there's surprising amount of road noise that intrudes. Perhaps it's the run flats which I'll likely change soon.

The interior is pretty nice. Get full leather, extended is so cheap looking. The aluminum trim is interesting, but they used a cheap plastic horseshoe around the shifter. I'll likely change to piano black as I did on my last M5. The stereo is ok for listening to satellite, but if you're streaming 128k soma radio or something relatively high quality, you should consider the B & O stereo.

The tranny is a million times better than the old smg, but I miss the rev-match downshifts. I really wish it still did that. Upshifts and downshifts are lightning quick.

My M1 button setting is sport steering and sport plus for everything else. The car is pretty responsive, but you're always aware of the weight, especially with that ultra long hood. These cars always wake up a bit following the run in service, so I'm hoping for a little better performance following that.

The M5 has definitely grown up, it's not the wild beast that last version was, it's more like a grown up e39, bigger, heavier and more luxurious.

I don't think the M5 is equipped with run flats.

They're MPSS. I think you're right. They sure are stiff.

Congrats. I'm not sure what you're comparing the car to but it's definitely a very fast car for me. Once on a roll its speed is comparable to GTR, Z06, R8 V10 all of which are supercars.

You sound a little disappointed-were you able to do a test drive before ordering?

What do you think of the steering and handling? You say grown up and more luxurious but also high road noise, how is it as a DD or tourer?

Brilliant DD and tourer. I was just hoping it would be more explosive.

Edit: the steering is really great. Thank goodness it's not electric.

I find that the dealers often have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to what tires their cars are wearing. The same misinformation had been presented to many current M3 owners also.

But take a look at your tires sidewall. Michelins indicate run flats with the ZP (zero pressure) designation and I didn't think they made the PSS in a run flat variant? Also, does your M5 have the M mobility kit in the boot?

The M5 tranny doesn't do a throttle blip on downshifts? Not even in S3/D3? I ask because I know the M3 DCT only does that in the higher modes, but I'd be surprised if the M5 doesn't at all.

It does, but it's not as loud as on E60/E63. But it has another trademark feature - sexy fart

M5/M6 does not have run flat anywhere in the world from the factory

BMW technical papers and parts system also warn "NON RUNFLAT"

Nice review. The performance of the F10 M5 is not very impressive to me as well. The car also feels bigger than my x6... I used to have a F01 750 w/ M pkg. The new M5 is more like a "M7" , IMO. May be I should get the new 4 door F80 M3.

im having similiar first impressions with my cls 63 TT.

a little underwhelming.

maybe its the nature of turbo chargers.

Having owned the M5V10 and driven the F10 extensively I will blame it on the turbo chargers and the fact that the F10 platform is just so big and comfortable to begin with. BMW did not do ///M any favours when building and designing that platform - if you have ever driven a 550 you will see that there is a huge difference in cars and appreciate the amount of effort that had to go into making the F10 M5 better. ///M did an amazing job for the scenario and new economy we are in - I just feel that BMW is really missing a car in between the F10 and F30 platform - this was the old E60 and E39 that are not there anymore.

Just my opinion...

I agree with you that the m5 is very fast..judging from the numbers..as i haven't driven one yet. But from looking at his car list i'm guessing he may be comparing it to his 997tt which is insanely fast.

I drove the E60 for three years and now the F10 for a few weeks and in my opinion there is absolutely no comparison between the two cars. The F10 is so far more refined in every respect. Mind you I did like the wail of 10 cylinders exploding at 8,000 rpm like some massive multi orgasmic aural delight.
