Now that I have my car back I was testing these seats yesterday and I really believe that the lack of side bolster adjustment makes them far inferior for the track than the seats on my old E92 M3. Anyone agree, or just me?
I felt like I'd be sliding side to side on a real track.

+1. I found hard cornering in my 09 m3 snug and confident. In my M5 I wander a bit in the seat. I haven't tracked the car (yet) but have some fun off ramps that are banked in my area which I push the car on. Don't get me wrong I'm not sailing out the window, but it is pretty frustrating to loose this option. Anyone else notice the S8 has 22 way seats?

I agree I notice it just on curvy back roads around my house. No way as good as even my crappy Z06 seats with adjustable side bolsters.

Whoa, I thought this thread was dead. LOL!

Yes I will have my M5 back in a couple of days too and I will report how much I miss adjustable side bolsters.

I think that this thread may resurge once the 2014 Model Year M5's are announced. If the 2014 M5's have adjustable side bolsters in the American and Canadian markets, there's going to be riots I'm sure.

I miss the seats on my car a little bit as Im not of the rotund set up in nature but its liveable... I have a C63 Black Series with no adjustable bolsters and a 997.2TT that has the air conditioned seats (you cant get bolsters if you have the air cooled seats) and both are fine for spirited driving.

The driving experience incorporated with the car makes up for the lack of lateral support and the seats still have enough form to cater to my body.

Oh wow, I didn't know that the 997.2TT and the C63 don't get the adjustable side bolsters either. Now I don't feel so bad.

Sick cars by the way!

The black series does not but the seat is about as contoured as it gets. The P car will get it if you build it that way but my car was a order cancel and the order had the air cooled seats instead (which work great here in cali). You can either get adaptive sport seats (bolster adjusters) or cooled seats but not both.

I guess when I first started tossing the M5 around into heavier turns I was missing the bolsters but have adapted- no pun intended LOL. I actually dont use any of the lumbar settings so I sit more deep in the seat which inturn holds me nicely or at least better.

I have had many a nice/performance cars in my life and most of them have NOT had the adjustable seats:

2001 E55 NOT
2002 Audi S4 NOT
2002 BMW M5 NOT
2003 BMW M3 NOT
2004 E55 NOT
2003 Porsche 996 TT NOT
2005 CL65 DID
2007 BMW M6 NOT (not sure)
2007 Porsche 997.1 TT NOT
2009 GTR NOT
2009 BMW M3 NOT
2010 E63 DID
2011 Porsche 997.2 TT NOT
2012 CLS 63 DID
2012 E63 Wagon DID
2012 C63 Black Series NOT
2013 M5 NOT

So for the most part only the Benzes had the seats. And these seats actually also adjusted based on the turns you were taking.

Your 2007 BMW M6 did in fact have adjustable side bolsters. The M6's never came with the Active Side Bolsters though.

Really? BMW NA never contacted me back again since I filed the official letter of complaint with them. Let us know what they say.

Don't expect a response. I was lied to and said a regional manager would contact me.

If you purchased this car while BMW was displaying inaccurate information on their website you have a strong argument to receive compensation . You should recognize that other owners have worked out their deals and it is on an individual basis . Nothing in my view is going to happen on a "class" basis. If you are getting the run around go back to your dealer and demand that the sales manager get involved on your behalf .

Yeah - here's the doc straight from my dealer after having ordered the car sight unseen showing 20 way's standard.

There are several points to be made about this seemingly never ending thread.

- First, notwithstanding the title someone put on the pdf document, there is nothing that the DOT, if that is meant to imply the U. S. Dept of Transportation, has to do with any marketing document. The U. S. Government doesn't approve marketing materials.

- Second, there is nothing "final" about the May 2012 brochure. There were equipment lists published by BMW of North America after that one.

- Third, if you feel you bought/paid for something you didn't get I suggest you contact an attorney that is experienced in litigating breach of contract matters. The first thing he/she should ask you to provide is a copy of your contract. Your contract is the document that both you and the seller (dealer) signed. Unless it is actually reproduced in the contract or is made a part of the contract by a specific statement incorporating it by reference a marketing brochure is not a part of the contract. In the absence of a specific provision of the contract there is probably wording that provides the equipment included in the car will be that standard equipment as of the date of the contract (not the date of an earlier marketing document) and any options or packages additionally ordered. You may think you were buying adjustable side bolsters but the contract you signed may not have said they were included. By signing the contract you bought what the contract said you bought, nothing more, nothing less.

- Fourth, and perhaps more importantly, why has seemingly everyone assumed BMW made the decision not to include the adjustable side bolsters??? It's much more likely that BMW intended to include them in all M5s sold in all countries but the U. S. Government (the federal safety bureaucrats) wouldn't approve it because the side impact airbags are located in the side bolsters of the seats and if the bolsters move it impacts the safety performance of the airbag. If the government refused to approve them it may have come down to a choice of selling the cars in the U. S. (North America?) without the adjustable side bolsters or not selling them at all. Which would you have preferred?

I would have preferred BMW redesigning the Airbag system while they were making the U.S. Market wait for an F10 M5 release until Q3 2012. But who knows, maybe didn't realize this foul up until it was too late before July production started on the 2013 models.

I am starting to seriously believe that we will see an airbag redesign with the 2014 LCI models for all of the regular F10 5-Series and the F10 M5 because of the hell that we raised about this issue.

I say the best resolution to this entire debacle is bigger lats and a stronger core. I sat in the car a few times as I wait and the seats hug me fine. Yes maybe not track ready but my 911 has the comfort seats and in high speed tracking you slip a little but not a lot - its not worth all this agony!
