Engine noise

Hi all,

Had the car only a week and the engine turned off while I was doing 60mph, no warning lights no messages, had an indy look and no errors in the ECU. gone to BMW now, awaiting their diagnosis... 2012 M5 102k mileage.

Link to the video showing engine knocking noise, anyone seen anything like this or had their engine shut down while driving!?

I would not run that engine. Tow it to a shop asap.

Yeah it's only been travelling on a tow truck to the Indy, and from the Indy to a BMW garage. This cars not going to see any real driving for some time, sadly

The cars got a full BMW service history too. Should not be dying at 100k miles this isn't 1970!

Hate to speculate but sounds like you've thrown a rod. I've heard that sound several times before in other cars including an S63TU.

I hope it's not

Thanks for your comments. Yes agreed a rod could well be the issue, the indy suspected some kind of serious big end issue, but couldn't say for sure without stripping the engine.

The dealer I bought the car from, and the warranty company they use, don't want to pay an indy to strip the engine at this stage, hence why the car is at BMW. They have hope of some goodwill from BMW given the cars full BMW service history, and sudden engine failure.

If it's a big end component failure then BMW may accept some kind of responsibility even though it's out of warranty.

I just want a working car, I've owned it for 3 weeks and only used it for a week of that! been in garages the last two weeks.

I can sympothize. I just bought a 2014 M5 CP two weeks ago and within 24 hours of purchase it blew a rod. Engine wouldn't even turn. Definitely not a flawless engine. BMW believes the rod was bent due to an open injector.

Was a new engine required? your car ok now?

I'm still waiting on BMW for their diagnosis, but I found out today that the dealer lied to BMW when they booked the car in at the garage and put it in under the previous owner's name instead of mine in some attempt to trick them as they think a single owner has a better chance of goodwill. (like they won't look up the owner or want to speak to the finance company!?!)

The dealer was then abusive to me on the phone when they found out I had called the garage. I was only checking I knew which garage the car was in!! I wonder what they're trying to hide?

My solicitor (lawyer) says I wont need to involve the dealer much more, as legally the most important parties are me, my finance company and BMW... at least they will behave like adults, I would hope.

An entire new short block was needed, but since the car was under the factory warranty there were no questions around replacement.
