M5 in the snow?
How do you think the 2013 M5 will fare in the snow w/ the 20'' 343 M wheels with the stock PSS tires?
Just wondering.

When I first got my M5 last December I got caught a few miles from home when a sudden snowfall started. Less than 10 miles to drive and the last 5 miles were a white knuckle ride! It was so bad I turned on the emergency flashers so other cars would know to go around, I was driving so slowly! I was thankful to make it to my driveway, but with its slight incline I didn't quite make it to the garage. Tires slipping too much in the fresh snow.

You have to understand that performance tires are very soft. That is what gives the best traction/performance. In cold temperatures (regardless of snow), the soft tires become hard and you get no traction. Snow makes the situation worse.
So to answer your question, no and it's dangerous. Get a set of winter tires or it you want a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires. Check tirerack.com for reviews.

I've accepted in winter on winter tyres the m5 is just a fast car. In summer it's a supercar. If you want all year round supercar performance then you need AWD. Unless of course you don't have a winter.

Is this a real question? I really can't understand why someone would buy a $100k+ car and contemplate this. Even if you put snows on it. If you have a $100K for a car, you should have proper alternate transportation if you must drive in a snow storm.
To answer the question; NO, it would not fare well, especially with Summer tires. You might as well save the trouble and purposely crash it into something. My wife had a Audi A4 with 19 inch performance tires. I took it out in 3 inches of snow and in one mile brought it back home because it was so bad I couldn't even have fun drifting it. |

I enjoy my M5 when roads are clear and dry, otherwise I am careful even on Winters.

Exactly...I could see if it was a AWD with snow tires. It could be fun in that aspect, but when you have a car with this much power whether you have snows or not it's just foolish. When it snows I drive my truck or my sled. |

I have winters on it and its amazing in the snow - quite impressed at how much of a difference the right rubber makes.

I drive mine everyday regardless the weather condition (well, on the days I do go out only). Proper winter tires are the way to go. I didn't pay $100k+ for something that can only be used for 8/12 months of a year. However, AWD/4WD can make it even better.

Agreed - with all the traction control aids on modern cars and the right winter set-up its not too bad. I went with Dunlop Winters and am impressed. Winters here in Calgary can be pretty tough - we have another winter storm warning on the horizon as I type.

You can get away with driving the M5 during the winter. I have in the past (E60 - which is probably easier than the F10 due to the amount of torque) and it's been okay. However I only drive it with winter tires fitted and on plowed roads or maybe if the roads have very light snow.
If the weather is bad, it doesn't make sense to take it out. It's not about getting traction moving forward.. it's more of a safety issue and getting traction while using the brakes. Sure you can anticipate and stop very early then crawl to the stop line.. however in the situation when someone cuts you off or slides and you need to avoid them.. that's where you could get into a bad situation.
