Just for reference lads,
Im a bit of a warm her up, cool her down properly sort of chap, and rev her within limits in the running in period, and after 2500 miles, she is just 1 bar down from the top. That includes her 1st service as well, so all is good here. A fabulous car.

Well, for the running in technique at least, still on 155 miles total since the 1st Sept. Good to hear that non-hard break-in also seems to work.

I have kept my M5 within Rev limits, 5.5K RPM is ok once oils are hot.

I was touring and encountered a lot of hills and valleys, that helps bed those rings in using the gears.

My dealer said I might struggle during break-in (driving too slowly).

What I probably needed was an CP chassis with a 35d engine. Opps, did I just say that out aloud, I go stand in the corner and give myself a stern talking to!

Babying this engine is a no no, it needs work IMO.
You do not need to RED Line it.

I was advised NO cruise control and once hot work the engine revs using the box to slow you down, I regularly go down as far as second gear to slow down from speed.

on the silverstone just note that it needs cleaning atleast twice a month. it's lovely but picks up every mark/dirt. if you have kids in my view its a big no no! I got some cleaning products from the US that stealth recommended - as I got some marks on the leather I couldn't remove, but the US stuff took it all off. I will post up links.
Ordered on 27th July - update today saying its in 1200 scheduled and locked down and starting manufacturing next week - hope it gets here before the end of Sept!

Thanks for advice on silverstone - no kids yet but will buy some good leather protector/cleaners - any recommendations?
Ah cool mine also went to that stage and will be built next week! Dealer says deliver 2 weeks after but I've seen it in the past be less than that if the stars align.

I will post up what I bought tomorrow for cleaning.

John - id wait until 5k miles before declaring victory on oil! ESP as the running in oil is less thick!

Its a race to see who gets theirs first the Neil! When did you order yours and whats your spec?

Having read the posts from John i'm seriously contemplating the upgraded M multifunction seats if its not too late to change my build - if its gone to 1200 is it now locked down?

Hi Jimbo, the STD seats should be OK if you don't get to upgrade, I have had back problems so the Multi's are just great for me.
The new High Beem Assist is really something and comes FREE with Xenons on the new LCI's.

Jim,
i would definitely recommend the M seats, they are a part of the experience in the M5, as soon as you sit in them, you will know you have made the right choice, and you can fiddle with them until perfection is achieved.

1200 is 'Scheduled for Production', so yes I believe it's locked down.

Mine was entered into the system last day of June, went 1200 2/3 week July & arrived in Southampton mid-August (arrive at dealer last week of August). You may only be a month or so away from getting it.

Incidentally, if you order any individual option, they get locked down sooner.

You may still be able to change the order, but your delivery date will suffer as its 1200

for running in I'm pretty sure that isn't the case otherwise I would wonder why you would need to change it? The X5M X6M doesn't need a run in service at 1200 miles so either this is a big scam by BMW or the oil isn't the right oil.

Neil.

Well from what I have been told Neil is the M5 is a different animal to STD BMW cars ( M3 also) and because of this the Oils are changed early.
I will get to the bottom of it and get it right, back soon.

The M5 uses the same engine as the X5M & X6M, so its interesting that they do not need an oil change at 1200 miles?

1200 means its scheduled, I think if you change the spec it will need to be rescheduled, which if you are lucky might be the same slot, if not might be a different slot. I have heard were people changed the spec the car was actually built earlier.

yup, hence why I thought they had put in special oil. Its the only reason why you'd have that special run in period.
