My M5 is almost TOO fast

I did my break-in service about 3 weeks ago and since then I have been gradually pushing this land rocket harder and harder. It is truly scary fast. Coming from an E92 M3 I was was used to going WOT often and with a feeling that I could pretty much handle its power. This is a whole different animal. Rolling acceleration in the M5 is more than I was expecting (and you guys warned me that that the torque would make me forget my M3 but still...). I am actually finding myself hesitant to floor it now. It builds speed so effing fast that you better know damn well where you are pointing it when you dial up all of the ponies. At about 5,000 rpm I swear the Devil himself grabs that car and yanks it forward. I always respected my M3's power but honestly right now I fear the power of the M5! I am hoping that as I drive it more I will get more comfortable with it. I am missing the M3 because I never felt like it was trying to kill me! I know that there are faster cars out there (not many from a roll I'll wager) but I am really taken aback by a car that is so luxurious and comfortable and so friggin' fast! I have had fast sports cars in the past but a large comfy sedan pushing me into the seat like this just doesn't compute in my brain. I now have a much better understanding of the criticism of the car being too fast for American highways - it just screams for the Autobahn. When you get right down to it, a car doesn't really need to be anywhere near this fast - but I'll force myself to get used to it.

Any of you guys out there with a little fear of the Beast?

yup totally agree. In the M3 I never feel out of control, but on WOT in the m5 i think shit I could die in this car LOL. that's what makes it such a great motor!

I don't fear it, but I do have a lot of respect for it. I have driven and owned several quick cars (my 07 vette has over 900bhp). The second you let your guard down with this level of power, it will bite you in the arse. Be very careful if you take the traction control off.

I like you guys had the E90 M3, but this monster is something else, I have only covered 1280 miles and it can get out of hand on damp roads without flooring it.
I felt in my comfort zone with the M3, this is something to gradually get used too, and winter tyres are an absolute must in cold weather to just stay on the road.

It can be "Scary" crossing white lines with power.

Looked at winter tyres John?
- i'm wheel spining entering some roundabouts in the damp.

FYI - there are no UK spec winter tyres that fit the 20" rims.
- BMW have no options at all; except going down to 19"s.

Ive always said that this M5 is quicker from a roll, than the MY 10 GT-R, and it is. I love the big kick of torque at 5k rpm, its addictive. When you nail the car, in dry warm weather i might add, and keep your foot in, when you should really be thinking about letting go, i believe that the M5 feels like it will literally take off into the air, like chitty chitty bang bang. The quality and performance of this car is quite remarkable, its something to be proud of.

I was told the same.
There is however a - european market - 20" winterset: style 409 m. They're quite light though not forged.
I agree, winters are a must in colder conditions.

The car is def a beast, also coming from a M3 the car is a LOT bigger which could also play a factor in the fear of control etc. Either way these new m5's and m6's are no joke! every time I drive one I am shocked at the raw power and how effortlessly the MPH climb!

be careful out there and good to see you are enjoying your new ride!

Would you mine sharing where you got these from. I don't fancy driving my 1st winter with the M5 on summer tyres. Never bothered with winters on my E92 M3 but the M5 is a nutty car.

I hate to say I fully agree it has more power than what I need. You do have to repect the car and learn to drive it. If you floor it underer the wrong conditions, and getting 4300 lbs to have good behavior wouldn't be fun. If you get the opportunity do the one day M school, and you will really learn what the car can do, and most important how to control it ......well it did for me. Just hit 4500 miles in a year. Enjoy.

^This. Will give you a platform to have more fun with the car because you will have had experience taking the car closer to its limits.

I will say that my F10 M5 is the fastest non-tuned car I have ever owned, which includes an '09 GT-R, '09 CTS-V and '05 MB CL65. I took all those cars to the track and datalogged them in various states of tune with a vbox and it isn't a seat-of the-pants conclusion. I datalogged the '09 GT-R (completely stock at the time) 0-60mph without launch control and it couldn't crack under 4s. The F10 M5 without launch control did 0-60mph in 3.67s (Supersprint Race mufflers, K&N drop-ins, stock Michelins, no air down and on regular street surface). Obviously, the GT-R got much faster after adding bolt-ons and tune but in near stock form the F10 M5 is faster...much faster from a roll....

GTR, GT500, GT2, yes. M5. Hell no. That shit needs to be faster or better yet lighter. I actually feel bad for my motor when flooring it going uphill lol. Especially when I have 4 guys in the car and they're like, let's feel the power. and the reaction is like... yeah, this car has a nice kick to it Def no holy sh*t responses like the others. Yes, the fact that it can haul 4 big guys is nice

Did you try the some "test" with the GT-R? A stock GT-R is SLOWER from a roll than an F10 M5..so I think your "analysis" is more psychological than reality...

I've scared many passengers in my M5, namely my mother who will never ride with me again. I came from a pretty quick car, but this thing just gathers speed exponentially rather than linearly in the M3, that's why it's so scary lol!
