Considering buying, why so many 2013s for sale???

Hello,

I've been a lurker on the forums for quite a few years now, and while having missed the chance to buy an E92 M3, I now have the opportunity and means to redeem myself and get an F10 M5. I am in the market for buying a new car when I get back from vacation next month, and have been actively searching on autotrader and BMWUSA CPO list. I've been to a few of the dealerships in South Florida and checked out the inventory and deals on getting a 2013 and also weighing out the option of ordering a 2014.

My main question/concern is, why are there so many 2013 M5's with low mileage for sale?? All of these cars, mostly loaded with the exact options I would want included are all under 7k miles?? I know I want to assume people just simply over-extended themselves and financed a car for $1000+/month suddenly realizing it was a bad idea, but I also find myself wondering, are people not satisfied with this car? OR, are they defected somehow?

Thanks for any input, I'm simply just thinking out loud over here...

Everyone wants the '14 models.

Early adopters tend to forget the update, refresh and/or new options in the out years. For the m5, the '14s have some improvements like the m6 steering wheel, some enhancements to the seats and, of course, the competition package option that can't be retrofitted (supposedly).

Now those begging for an early production f10 m5 can't handle the thought of some late adopting poser getting a superior car thus the dumping of '13s IMHO.

Just test drove today the last 2013 M5 they have at BMW Tenafly NJ.

They took it back from a customer whose paperwork didn't go through or something (weird story), 800 miles on the odo, MT, Driver Assist, Executive 343M wheels, B&O, Night Vision, Azurite Black on Sakhir Orange + Anthracite wood.
$112 sticker, *significantly* discounted. PM if you want the salesman I know there.

I didn't even push but by the sound of it, prob. $105K. I haven't looked at the market, don't know how that compares to what's out there.

Aren't dealers in FL sitting on bunch of them (2013) as well?

Dont know outside of california, but here I would walk away if they dont start at 1000 over invoice on a 2013. I know of a few dealers that are willing to deal in my search for my m5.

Also, that new jersey dealer story on the m5 sounds wierd like u said. Sounds more like a demo? Maybe an exec car being fully loaded like it is. I wouldnt spend more than 12k off msrp. Encinitas bmw tried to pass a blue m5 on me. 2000+ miles and they said "oh no, its not a demo". Yeah right. Iwas outta there. No wonder they still have 11 m5s still sitting on their lot.

With a little bit of patience and no care at for the '14 changes, I am sure there will be great deals to be had on the '13. It's just a lot of work to compile the info, reach out to everyone and ... press.

Can someone comment on the FL market? They usually have to sell their inventory to out of state buyers to get rid of it, right?

I had a lot of fun with the MT!

Actually Florida dealers don't discount very much. I live in Florida and I bought both of my last 2 BMWs out of state for this reason.

The reason for their high inventory levels are because they have high sales volumes (the largest BMW dealer in the world is in South Florida), they have a lot of high net worth buyers who buy spontaneously (ie don't want to wait) and pay MSRP, and they export a lot of the cars to LatAm customers. To a LatAm customer a low mileage M5 is a bargain compared with buying one locally. They also buy private cars off Autotrader - last year I got a couple of serious LatAm buyers for my '12 550i who triggered a bidding war pushing the price above my advertised price.

Insightful. Thank you.

Wouldn't the import tax kill the deal for those LatAm clients buying in the US/ FL and shipping home?

I was out at the Coconut Creek dealership (The Largest one around) and they did not have any M5's on the lot. They said they could order a new one, or see what other dealers have in stock. I wasn't very interested to look at a computer screen at a dealership when I could do the same thing on my own time. As I was walking out, a white on white M5 was pulling up to the doors of the showroom where a customer was taking delivery, the sales manager told me , "this is the only m5 like this in this part of the world, its completely bulletproof." He couldn't comment on how much exactly the car was, only that it was about 150 ON TOP of the price of the car. Looked like a tank, some old man was picking it up with an entourage of 8 guys in suits.

I would be very careful of purchasing a car that someone only drove for 1k miles. People who can't afford certain toys tend to not follow procedure when breaking in these toys and ,"drive it like they stole it." Thats why I'm very skeptical of all these 2013 M5's with less a couple thousand miles on the clock for sale. I can totally understand if people bought them, then traded for the M6 GC or they just weren't totally satisfied with the car, but back when the E92 m3 dropped, I couldn't find anything on any website for a good deal for quite some time, ESPECIALLY with low mileage like that on it.
