Winter Storage
Hey guys. Winter is coming really soon, and its already cold enough for the tires to barely grip in the northeast. So I will be detailing the car and storing it in my garage in a week till warmer weather.
Just a quick question... Should I do anything with the battery? Maybe charge it? I am thinking that it will die during this time. |

Hook the car up to a CTEK charger. I personally use the Multi US 4.3 model and love it!

If you are going to be storing it for 3 months or more fuel stabilizer is must and fresh oil isn't a bad idea. You also should avoid parking brake and pressure tires to sidewall max. (deflate before using again)

Last year I started mine once a month and let it run for about 30min. Was fine, and no battery issues. It was stored in a heated garage though. Stored from October till April.

1) Fuel stabilizers. Gasoline has a shelf life ideally of about 3 months. Octane deteriorates as time goes passes. Stabilizer will help to combat this. It is cheap fuel insurance. (Ethanol fuel is worse for shelf life)
2) Fresh oil. Pretty straight forward, no water and gunk left in the bottom of the crank all winter. 3) Tire pressure to max sidewall prevents flat spotting of tires. I would not recommend driving at Max sidewall pressure. Storage however is not a problem. 4) If you are parked on a level surface just block the tires (prevent rolling in manual transmission) DCT has park. High metallic content pads (M Compound) can stick to rotor if moisture is present. The C-Tek charger is always a good idea for battery life. Beyond your car being able to start once a month it keeps it maintained (floating charge) as if you were driving daily. Changing out the battery in our cars is not a $65 trip to Walmart or Canadian Tire. So anything that will keep the battery living longer is worth it IMO.
