Drove the F10 M5 at the BMW Performance Center!!
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com In short, the car is fantastic. Some may miss the screaming V10 but the turbine like rush of acceleration, pulling hard from a slow corner even in 3rd, is mighty impressive. Second gear was even more impressive but I wasn't brave enough in the short drive to explore the limits of MDM at corner exit. Handling does feel to be the perfect mix of a smooth yet firm ride, and tight neutral responsive turn in and grip. The carbon ceramic brakes were quite good but I can't say if they would be noticeably different/better on track. I was one of the last persons in the last group to drive it, so they were warmed up and the brakes had no noise that I could tell. Unfortunately we were hustled from car to car so I didn't have much time to look it over and get to enjoy the car. I did notice it had the multi contour sport seats (no perfs) but I couldn't find the side bolster adjustments. It felt I could have used more. Are they fully automatic? Note I also drove the M3 shortly after the M5. Having driven the M3 many times before, I was immediately comfortable pushing it. The M5 does feel much bigger and softer edged but also feels it could be just as capable in the corners, and faster overall, especially throughout the power band where the M3 is happiest above 4K. PS: The instructors are still using the E60 M5 for the hot laps. It's hard not to be impressed with the screaming V10 at 8K RPMs along with the screaming tires in the viscous power slides they do with the cars. It is a real testiment to German engineering how those cars can do that day after day for the 2 years they have run these cars since E60 production ended... Having been there before, I think they are now pushing them the hardest ever. We shall see if the F10s can do the same.

Been agonizing over ordering Alpine White, but I think I'll be very happy with it.

Very nice! Too bad you didn't get to see the Sakhir Orange!
Did you get to drive a 1M?

I drove the 1m in M School, not this event. Fun but didn't like it as much as the M3.

I know this has been answered before (but I can't find/google it) but, are the orange reflectors on the front bumper cut into the bumper (like E92s) or go on the bumper like M3s?

I really liked the sound. Several videos I've heard are pretty close to actual. Its a relatively quiet, very smooth, progressive, turbine like sound. It adds to the experience. I didn't spend enough time in the car to descern whether it was artificial or not. On the other hand, stepping in the M3 and punching it definitely is a more throaty exhaust/intake growl that becomes a scream at high RPMs. Most enthusiasts would prefer the latter but luxury owners would prefer the M5.
I think their intended M5 market is an extremely capable luxury sedan with world class performance and few if any compromises. It suits that very well. The e60 is a wild child in comparison. <- a paraphrased quote from an instructor. An additional thought is given the following 4.4TT V8 models, they are in order of sound level 550i, 650i, M5, X5 50i, X5M. The 550i is extremely distant and quiet. The 650i adds a nice exhaust growl. The M5 is a similar volume but smoother, less throaty. The X5 50i (that I own) has an interesting almost diesel like intake growl. The X5M has the loudest deepest growl on hard accel. Very interesting differences for basically the same motor, with different levels of tune and exhaust.

Fast forward to the reason I'm ordering the M3. I think its the last of the cars that can be flogged around the track yet be nice and civil enough to use for work/family. Maybe the new M3 will offer the same but having come from 12yrs of turbo cars I'll bet it won't be as crisp as the E46 or E92 NA powerplants no matter what you do to it. BTW Richard mine is status 152 today, paint. I'll update once I hear from my rep on PCD ETA.

I'm proud to say I attended M school at BMW Performance Driving school yesterday and got to try one of the new F10s. Amazing car!!!
600 pound feet of torque made driving the skid pad a whole new experience! Just touching the gas put the car in an oversteer. Power slides anyone!? Loved it. Gorgeous interior with many similarities to the F30, interestingly. Got to ride in the passenger seat during an instructor's hot lap which blew my mind. Smoke, smoke, smoke. I enjoyed the M3 on the track slightly more because of the lesser weight.
