All Season Tires/Winter Tires..

I just purchased my M5 2015 with performance package. Beautiful car. The tires are oem. When I drive or accelerate to hard the back tires spin a bit. I want to get new tires on all four wheels since its winter and Id rather not die lol. I spoke with someone from a tire store and they recommended all season tires. I told them from reviews winter tires are better for this car though.. He did not agree. What do you guys think? Is it necessary to buy winter tires when the snow is not as crazy as in the Midwest, or can all season work? Thank you for your responses.

I would 100% go with snow tires ! All season will not do it, more people will chime in. It's either summer high performance or winter tires, no in between lol.

Any specific winter tire you recommend? Right now I am driving Michelin Pilot Super Sport 265/35zr20 front and Michelin pilot super sport 295/30zr20 back...

What's the saying 'all seasons suck all year'. I personally have winter and summers. Im running Sottozero's for winter and they have been fine. You are probably limited to what's left in stock with the season being later.

OEM winter setup is 19" Sotto Zero 255/40 square on 408m's. The 408's differ in f/r offset but are the same width. Best to go with a dedicated winter wheel/tire setup, as anything below 35 and the PSS's begin to harden and lose traction, even in dry weather. The rubber compound is not designed for cold.

As for all-weather, stay away.

I am buying front 265/30/20 Yokohama Winter Drive V905 front & Bridgestone Blizzaks 295/35/20 rear.. I went to two different tire shops and they both said there are no four tires from one company that fits my wheels correctly.. Hopefully I am making a good decision with these two brands.

For what its worth, my M5 is my daily driver, and with the 408m/SottoZero setup I can get through most anything.

This is the best advice. Alternatively the 409M set if you want/need 20". If not 408M is the way to go.

Definitely need winter tires on this car. I'm in Canada daily driving the M5 on the 409M with Bridgestone Blizzak tires, works great.

I run sottozero in the winter, I do not do much driving in the snow with this car but I rather be prepared if I get caught out there. I had no choice to drive in a few inches here and there last winter and they held very well. I am in NYC so your winter may be different from here. But 100% don't go all season tires.

My past two cars were xDrive and I ran Continental DWS as my "winter" tire. Combined with xDrive, both were unstoppable.

With this car I'm planning dedicated snows.

Do not go this route! The tire shops you are talking with have their heads up their a$$es. Two different brands and 295's for winter...absolutely not. Get 265/35/20 on all four. Tire rack has Dunlop SP winter 3D in 265/35/20 that will fit the M5 front and rear.

I'm running Dunlop 3D winter tires 265/35/20 all around on staggered 20" 343 wheels right now.

I'll switch these tires to the 601 wheels and running Michelin summer tires on the 343 wheels after the winter is over.

I'm currently working through this thought exercise myself. I'd always assumed that winter tires were preferable to all-season tires for, well, winter. I'm rethinking that now based on a few things I've found.

First off: ever notice that everyone is quick to state that winter tires are better than other tires even if there's no snow, but when it comes to tests and numbers both tire companies and publications only ever compare winter versus all-season performance on snow/ice but not on sub-freezing dry pavement? There's a reason for that.

Winter tires are in fact *not* more performant on cold dry pavement!

The conclusion from Icy Road Safety is that overall winter performance is safer with all-season tires because in the overwhelming majority of the US much more winter driving is done on cold dry roads rather than icy or snowy roads. In those relatively rare instances in which you are actually driving on snow and ice the best thing you can do for safety is simply slow down.

Interested to hear what you all think. Was certainly very illuminating to me after so many years of hearing the same ideas parroted all around but without the tests to back it up.
