if you can't start the car, how do you push it?
if the engine is on and you turn it off without setting the parking brake, it will roll. but what if you need to roll it but the engine won't turn on, like if the battery died?
thanks.

On the E9x M3 there is a documented procedure for the emergency release of the parking brake, however it still assumes you have battery power...
This process is NOT documented for the F10 M5 (at least not in the online version of the manual) and I can't confirm it right now as the car is in hibernation But here you go : * Removed the shifter boot is to gain access to the release mechanism. • Using the screw driver from the vehicle tool kit or (similar tool), unclip the release mechanism cover. • Insert the screw driver/tool in the release mechanism to the left of the shifter. • Move the release toward the rear of the vehicle and observe the shifter indicator light illuminate the “N” position

I think the 2013 may be different.. I pulled the cup holders out and below that was a foam insulation piece. There wasn't no white plastic release piece shown in the diagram.

As the electric parking brake is part of the rear calipers I don't think there's a manual override anymore . May have to completely remove the caliper assembly to disable the p-brake. Or apply aux power to release it .

this is pretty dumb ass on bmw's part. granted i haven't had to have a car towed in a long time, but there are times when it would be nice to push the car a foot or two like in the garage without having to turn the engine on.

Had this problem...if the battery is dead - you're fcuk'd
A battery on a then-new 2011 F10 died while it was parked on the street. Long story short, after about 6 hours of trying to free up the rear wheels, a flurry of phone calls to BMW Service, Assist, Jesus-Hotline, etc, 3 tow service trucks/drivers, and 3 BMW Service personnel from a nearby dealer on scene, it was determined that the car could not be moved, short of placing the rear wheels on a dally large and strong enough to support a 4200 lbs car. Lucky for all 7 of us, the dealer was 'only' a few miles away and we managed to push the car behind a slow moving tow truck which was pulling it from a weird angle to keep the dally from sliding from under the rear wheels.
After that experience, I decided not to buy another BMW product. Now, 2 years later, I'm about to pull the trigger on a new M car...But this post has brought back memories and just made my blood boil...some what... |

If the battery is empty/dead jump starting the car will allow you to release the electric brake.
So the instance where you have no power and need to release the e-brake should be very limited.

Try it put the car in park and leave the e-brake off. Mine doesn't roll. I leave it like this in winter (garaged) as I don't want the rear brake to stick. |

do NOT try to pry off cupholder in a 2013 model. i snapped off a little plastic doohickey that it hinges on. and there was nothing down there to see. that was my motherfu**er moment of the morning.

Post above deleted, so no further problems occur. Not above reference to documents posted by Jason have same error about removing cup holders. If you look carefully at picture described as F10 M5 it is a regular 5 series automatic shifter shown. |

so, while putting spacers on this weekend, i noticed the front wheels will spin even with the parking brake engaged. so... that means you should be able to pull the car onto a trailer or tow it with the front wheels down, no? or will they lock if you incline the car too much?
